Brazil to reopen Antarctic research station

SAO PAULO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Brazil is set to reopen its Antarctic research station, which was destroyed by fire in 2012 and rebuilt by the China National Electronics Import and Export Corporation (CEIEC), Vice President Hamilton Mourao said on Sunday.

The Comandante Ferraz station on King George Island will be re-inaugurated on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

"We are going to give scientific research in the Antarctic a new impetus," said Mourao, who plans to travel to the region on Monday for the opening ceremony.

Brazil’s President Will Not Attend World Economic Forum

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 9 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, will not attend the upcoming World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, presidential spokesperson, Otavio Rego Barros, said.

“The President and his assistants, analysed a series of aspects — economic, security, political. And those aspects, together, allowed the President to evaluate that he should not participate in this forum at this moment,” Rego Barros, said.

Bolsonaro mentioned the possibility of not attending the summit earlier this week, citing security reasons.

Brazil Pres Bolsonaro assures Brazil will maintain trade with Iran

Brazil promulgates heavy handed anti crime bill

BRASILIA, Dec 28 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has signed into law an anti-crime bill that toughens measures to stem a rampant deadly crime wave, although he vetoed some parts of the bill, the government said.

The anti-crime package, which was approved by Brazil’s Senate earlier this month, toughens laws to tackle corruption, organized crime and violent crime practiced by criminal gangs. It also simplifies sentencing in some cases.

Brazil's Bolsonaro says he had partial memory loss after a fall this week

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Tuesday night that he briefly lost his memory after falling at his presidential residence in Brasilia, the capital, earlier this week.

The president’s office disclosed on Monday that Bolsonaro, 64, had suffered a fall and was taken to a hospital Monday night for a brain scan, which detected no abnormalities. Bolsonaro spent the night in the hospital and was discharged on Tuesday.

Brazil hits record oil output of 3 mln bpd

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's oil output reached a record of 3 million barrels per day (bpd) in November, the Brazilian government said on Monday.

Last month's oil production reached 3.09 million bpd, breaking the previous record of 2.98 million bpd set in August, according to the state-run National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels.

In November, oil production grew 4.3 percent compared with October and 20.4 percent compared with November 2018.

Brazil: Pres Bolsonaro hospitalized after he slipped in bathroom

BRASILIA, Dec 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized after suffering a fall at his official residence in Brasilia, the latest health scare for the 64-year-old, his office said.

Local media reported that Bolsonaro hit his head when he slipped in a bathroom at the Alvorada Palace.

He was taken to the Armed Forces Hospital where he underwent a cranial CT scan, “which did not detect any changes,” his communications office said in a statement.

The rightwing leader will remain at the hospital for observation, the statement added.
