Japan offers aid and COVID vaccines to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, March 20 (Reuters) - Japan on Sunday pledged to offer Cambodia about $428 million in aid and 1.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX global vaccine-sharing programme.

The pledges were part of several agreements signed by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen during Kishida's visit to Phnom Penh.

Japan will provide a support loan of 45 billion yen ($378 million) and grant aid through contribution to international organisations of 6 billion yen ($50 million).

Japan’s PM visits Cambodia, also one of China’s key partners

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was in Cambodia for talks with his counterpart, Hun Sen, on Sunday to deepen relations with one of the Southeast Asia’s closest partners of both China and Japan.

Kishida and Hun Sen were discussing cooperation covering trade and investment, education, infrastructure, defense and security, and the post-pandemic recovery, Cambodian officials said.

Cambodia jails more opposition politicians for sedition

PHNOM PENH, March 17 (Reuters) - A Cambodian court sentenced 20 former politicians and activists to up to 10 years in prison on Thursday for sedition, a lawyer and a human rights group said, part of a broad crackdown on the opposition that has drawn international condemnation.

Sam Rainsy, the self-exiled founder of the disbanded opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), has already been convicted of multiple offences and was among those found guilty on Thursday over remarks the authorities says were tantamount to plotting to overthrow the government.

Cambodia Donates 10 More Vaccine Vans To Neighbouring Laos

PHNOM PENH, Mar 12 (NNN-AKP) – Cambodia today provided 10 more vaccine vans, to help neighbouring Laos fight the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said.

Cambodian health ministry’s secretary of state and spokeswoman, Or Vandine, handed over the vehicles to Lao health minister, Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, at the Trapeang Kriel international border checkpoint, in Stung Treng province, bordering Laos’ Champasak.

Cambodia’s Exports Of Famed Kampot Pepper Up 63 Percent Last Year

PHNOM PENH, Mar 11 (NNN-AKP) – The exports of renowned Kampot pepper, one of Cambodia’s only two products to be registered as a Geographical Indication in the European Union, had increased sharply in 2021, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, a farmers’ representative said today.

Ngoun Lay, president of the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association, said, the nation exported 114 tonnes of Kampot pepper last year, up 63 percent from 70 tonnes in the year before.

Cambodia-EU trade up 4.6 pct last year

PHNOM PENH, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Bilateral trade between Cambodia and the European Union (EU) was valued at 4.5 billion euros (4.98 billion U.S. dollars) in 2021, up 4.6 percent from a year earlier, said a joint press release on Thursday.

Main products Cambodia exported to EU are agricultural products, including milled rice, textiles, footwear, travel goods and bicycles, while key items the kingdom imported from EU include construction materials, food and beverage, electronics and pharmaceutical products, among others.

Cambodia, Int'l Finance Corporation promote mediation to resolve commercial disputes

PHNOM PENH, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's National Commercial Arbitration Center (NCAC) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) are promoting mediation to resolve business disputes and build investors' trust in commercial litigations, said a joint statement on Wednesday.

The effort is aimed at helping improve Cambodia's investment climate while supporting businesses to recover from the impacts of COVID-19 and continue job creation, the statement said.

Chinese investment in Cambodia rises in 2021 despite pandemic

PHNOM PENH, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese investment in Cambodia had increased significantly in 2021 despite the negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, which truly reflected Chinese investors' trust in Cambodia's business environment, officials and experts said on Friday.

Cambodia attracted fixed-asset investment of 2.32 billion U.S. dollars from China last year, up 67 percent from 1.39 billion dollars in the year before, according to a report from the Council for the Development of Cambodia.

Malaysia Wants Myanmar To Bounce Back, Discuss Repatriation Of Rohingya Refugees

PHNOM PENH, Feb 24 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia has always regarded Myanmar as a neighbouring country and a valued member of ASEAN, and would like to see the country bounce back and return to a normal situation in accordance with the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC), said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Cambodian, Malaysian PMs vow to further enhance cooperation in post-pandemic era

PHNOM PENH, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and his visiting Malaysian counterpart Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Thursday vowed to further strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era for mutual benefits.

The commitment was made during their around two-hour talks at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia.
