China, US officials to attend Southeast Asia defense meeting

BEIJING (AP) — The defense chiefs of rival powers China and the U.S. will both attend next week’s expanded meeting of Southeast Asian security ministers in Cambodia, though it’s unclear whether they would meet face to face.

China’s Defense Ministry said Gen. Wei Fenghe will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Defense Ministers’ Meeting-Plus from Sunday to Thursday.

The Department of Defense said Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III will also attend following stops in Canada and Indonesia.

Global stocks mixed after Wall St falls on rate hike worries

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets fell Friday while Europe opened higher after a Federal Reserve official suggested U.S. interest rates might have to be raised higher than expected to cool inflation.

London and Frankfurt advanced while Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo declined. Wall Street futures were lower. Oil prices gained.

Ambassador praises ‘high-level’ Russia-China coordination on world stage

BEIJING, November 17. /TASS/: Coordination between Russia and China on international platforms is at a very high level, Russia’s ambassador to China, Igor Morgulov, told the media on Thursday.

"Of course, I cannot but mention the regular personal meetings and constant contacts between the foreign ministers. On November 15, in Bali, they met for a tenth time this year," he said.

"I think this dynamic speaks for itself: the coordination of efforts between Russia and China in the international arena is at a very high level," Morgulov stressed.

China says Xi was not criticising Trudeau in meeting at G20

BEIJING, Nov 17 (Reuters) - China's foreign ministry on Thursday said Chinese President Xi Jinping was not criticising Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a day after Xi was seen confronting him at the G20 summit over alleged leaks from a meeting they held.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular media briefing that Beijing supports having frank exchanges as long as they are held on an equal basis, and said China hopes Canada will take action to improve bilateral ties.

In ‘zero-COVID’ China, 1 case locks down Peking University

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities locked down a major university in Beijing on Wednesday after finding one COVID-19 case as they stick to a “zero-COVID” approach despite growing public discontent.

Peking University students and faculty were not allowed to leave the grounds unless necessary and classes on the main campus — where the case was found — were moved online through Friday, a university notice said. Still, some people could be seen entering and leaving the main campus Wednesday in the Chinese capital’s Haidian district.

China reports 10,000 new virus cases, capital closes parks

BEIJING (AP) — Beijing closed city parks and imposed other restrictions as the country faces a new wave of COVID-19 cases, even as millions of people remained under lockdown Friday in the west and south of China.

The country reported 10,729 new cases on Friday, almost all of them testing positive while showing no symptoms. More than 5 million people were under lockdown Friday in the southern manufacturing hub Guangzhou and the western megacity Chongqing.

Pakistan’s govt, army providing strict security for Chinese projects: Zhao Lijian

BEIJING, Nov 9 (APP): The Pakistani government and army have been providing strict security protection to the Chinese projects, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday.

“We have worked in Pakistan for a long time. Based on my understanding, the Pakistani government and military there have been providing strict security protection for the Chinese projects,” he said during his regular briefing.

The spokesperson said that China and Pakistan had close communication and coordination over security matters.

China launches first technical trade service platform for Africa

CHANGSHA, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The China-Africa Technical Measures to Trade Research and Evaluation Base was on Wednesday launched in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, according to Changsha Customs.

It is China's first technical trade service platform for Africa. The signing ceremony for this base was held at the Summit on High-quality Development of Non-tariff Measures to Trade during the ongoing fifth China International Import Expo (CIIE).
