India: DDA inflated prices of houses for EWS beneficiaries: AAP

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) The AAP on Sunday alleged the prices of houses for economically weaker section (EWS) beneficiaries were inflated by Delhi Development Authority from its original cost as part of a "scam".

AAP leader Sanjay Singh claimed flats should have been made available for Rs 6.90 lakh and Rs 11 lakh in easy installments. "(But) after years of struggling, those beneficiaries are told to arrange Rs 19 lakh and Rs 24 lakh, which means three times more than they claimed and promised."

India: BJP holds kite festival in support of CAA in Jaipur

Jaipur, Jan 12 (PTI) The BJP on Sunday held a kite festival here in support of Citizenship Amendment Act where party leaders and workers flew kites with slogans in support of CAA written on them.

Such kites were also distributed to people on the occasion.

The festival was organised at Agrawal college and was participated by the party's state president Satish Poonia, Jaipur MP Ramcharan Bohra, former BJP's state unit president Ashok Parnami and others.

India: Khalistan supporter arrested in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jan 12 (PTI) The Central Crime Branch of Bengaluru has arrested an alleged Khalistan supporter who had fled Punjab and was hiding in the city, police said on Sunday.

A hunt was launched for Jarnail Singh Sidhu, who was wanted by the Punjab police, after the internal security division lodged a case against him in February, 2019, the police said.

He was staying as a paying guest here for the last four months and was working at the Bagmane Tech Park, they added.

India: 2 held for waiving black flags at Modi's convoy in Kolkata

Kolkata, Jan 12 (PTI) Two persons were on Sunday arrested here for waiving black flags at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy, police sources confirmed.

One of the two was identified as Sourav Prasad, the president of the West Bengal unit of the Congress Chatra Parishad, they said.

He was held from outside Netaji Indoor Stadium where Modi had come to attend a programme organised by the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), police said.

India: Nationwide NRC needless, has no justification: Nitish

Patna, Jan 13 (PTI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday asserted that a nationwide implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) was needless and had no justification.

He made the remarks on the floor of the state assembly while thanking the House members for unanimously approving a constitutional amendment for extending quotas to SCs and STs by another 10 years.

India: Opposition leaders meet in Delhi to discuss CAA situation

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) Opposition leaders met on Monday to discuss the current political situation following widespread protests against the amended Citizenship Act and the violence on campuses.

The meeting convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Parliament complex was attended by leaders of opposition parties like NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, LJD chief Sharad Yadav, Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja, besides Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh was also present.

India: BJP office gutted in Bengal

Asansol (WB), Jan 13 (PTI) A BJP office was gutted in West Bengal's Paschim Burdwan district, following which the saffron party activists accused the TMC of being behind the incident.

A party office of the BJP at Salanpur area in Asansol was reduced to ashes in a blaze on Sunday night and an investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the fire, a senior police officer said.

The BJP has put the blame on TMC, which the ruling party in West Bengal has denied, terming the incident a result of a brawl between "goons" of the saffron party.

India: Bhim Army chief taken to AIIMS for follow-up treatment

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad, arrested in connection with violence during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest in Old Delhi's Daryaganj, was taken to AIIMS on Monday for "follow-up consultation and treatment".

Aazad is suffering from polycythemia, a condition in which the body makes too many red blood cells.

India: Jamia students gherao VC's office, demand registration of FIR against Delhi Police

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) Hundreds of Jamia Millia Islamia students gheraoed Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar's office on Monday, demanding registration of an FIR against Delhi Police in connection with last month's violence on the campus.

Among other demands, they also want the university to reschedule examinations and ensure security of students.

The students barged into the office premises after breaking the lock on the main gate and raised slogans against the VC.
