Woman claiming to hail from India's Bihar lands in Pakistan jail

Dehri on Sone (Bihar), Dec 23 (PTI) A 51-year-old woman, claiming to be from this Bihar town, has landed in a Pakistan jail, police said on Monday.

Superintendent of Police, Rohtas district, Satyaveer Singh said a communication was received from the state headquarters seeking verification of details of the woman named Naqaya, who claims to hail from "Koni Bigha, Dehri on Sone".

India: Mentally challenged Pakistani prisoner dies in J-K

Jammu, Dec 23 (PTI) A mentally challenged Pakistani prisoner, who was arrested near the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district about six years ago, died after a prolonged illness here, officials said on Monday.

Aziz-ur-Rehman (50), who was under detention at district jail Amphalla, complained of breathlessness and was rushed to Government Medical College Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, they said.

The officials said he was arrested in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district in 2013 shortly after crossing into this side from across the LoC.

India: Harsh Vardhan Shringla appointed new foreign secretary

New Delhi, Dec 23 (PTI) Seasoned diplomat Harsh Vardhan Shringla was on Monday appointed as the new foreign secretary for a two-year fixed term, succeeding Vijay Gokhale.

Shringla, a 1984 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), is considered an expert on India's neighbourhood and is currently serving as envoy to the US.

His appointment comes at a time when India is facing a plethora of foreign policy challenges including dealing with an increasingly assertive Trump administration and China's attempt to expand its military and economic influence in the region.

India: Absence of people-centric issues led to BJP's defeat: Congress

Ranchi/Patna, Dec 23 (PTI) The Congress on Monday thanked the people of Jharkhand for giving the 3-party alliance led by the JMM a clear mandate and claimed that absence of people-centric issues has cost the BJP dearly in the polls.

AICC in-charge for Jharkhand, R P N Singh, said the party is happy for its best performance in the state since its creation in 2000.

India: Mangaluru violence: Police release video of protesters bringing stones

Bengaluru, Dec 24 (PTI) Days after the violent protests in Mangaluru against CAA resulted in the deaths of two people, police released video clippings purportedly showing protesters bringing stones in an auto-trolley, hurling it at the personnel and trying to destroy the CCTV cameras.

The video also shows protesters covering their face with clothes to conceal their identity and attempting to destroy CCTV cameras in a bid to wipe out evidences.

Thiruvananthapuram/Kozhikode, Dec 24 (PTI) As anti-CAA protests continues across Kerala, Union Minister V Muraleedharan and Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddiyurappa were shown black flags by students' outfits on Tuesday, even as various Muslim outfits took out a march to Raj Bhavan here.

A group of activists of Students Federation of India (SFI), the students' wing of the ruling CPI(M), waved black flags at Muraleedhran when he came to attend a function at the Town Hall in Kozhikode.

Modi's party loses Indian state election amid protests over citizenship law

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party lost control of another state on Monday, adding to a string of electoral losses since last December amid protests that mark the biggest challenge to the Hindu-nationalist leader.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conceded defeat in the eastern state of Jharkhand, with an alliance of the main opposition Congress party and a regional bloc slated to take control of the resource-rich province.

India: 3 CAA/NRC protestors killed in Kanpur

Kanpur (UP), Dec 22 (PTI) A 30-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Sunday, taking the death toll in violence in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur during protests against the citizenship law to three, police said.

Two persons had died on Friday in clashes between the protesters and police.

Another person, Mohd Raees, who sustained critical injuries in Babupurwa, was admitted to the Hallet Hospital on Saturday for treatment, Kanpur range Inspector General Mohit Agarwal said.

India: Another rape victim in UP succumbs after immolation bid

Unnao, Dec 22 (PTI) A 23-year-old woman who had set herself afire after lodging a complaint of rape died in Kanpur's Hallet Hospital, an official said on Sunday.

Sub-divisional magistrate Pradeep Kumar on Sunday said that she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

She was buried in her garden in the village on Sunday evening, said the official who is camping in there.
