India: Maha polling starts, 5.64 pc voting in Mumbai in first 2 hrs

Mumbai, Oct 21 (PTI) Mumbai suburbs on Monday recorded 5.64 per cent polling in the first two hours as voting got underway for the 288 Assembly seats in Maharashtra, an election official said.

Long queues were observed outside several polling stations, indicating the percentage may go up in subsequent hours, the official said.

Voting began at 7 am and will end at 6 pm.

India, Pakistan trade barbs over deadly Kashmir clash

SRINAGAR, India/ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - India and Pakistan blamed one another for cross-border shelling in the disputed Kashmir region which killed and injured soldiers and civilians on both sides and made it one of the deadliest days since New Delhi revoked Kashmir’s special status in August.

India said there was heavy shelling by Pakistan across the border in northern Kashmir’s Tangdhar region late on Saturday night, killing two Indian soldiers and one civilian.

India: 360 infra projects show cost overruns of Rs 3.88 lakh cr

New Delhi, Oct 20 (PTI) As many as 360 infrastructure projects, each worth Rs 150 crore or more, have shown cost overruns to the tune of over Rs 3.88 lakh crore owing to delays and other reasons, a report said.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation monitors infrastructure projects worth Rs 150 crore and above. Of these 1,608 projects, 360 reported cost overruns and 550 time escalation.

India: FIR against Bihar BJP chief, for poll code violation

Kishanganj (Bihar), Oct 20 (PTI) An FIR has been lodged against Bihar BJP chief Sanjay Jaiswal and Sweety Singh, the party's candidate for Kishanganj assembly bypoll, for allegedly violating the model code of conduct, an official said.

The FIR was registered at Sadar police station on Saturday evening following a written complaint by Kishanganj Sadar Circle Officer Shafi Ahmad, Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Shanawaz Ahmad Niyazi said.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday hit out at Union minister Piyush Goyal for his remarks that Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee is "Left-leaning", saying "these bigots are blinded by hatred" and have no idea what a professional is.

Goyal, at a media briefing in Pune, had described Banerjee as a "Left-leaning" person. The Nobel laureate on Saturday told a TV channel that the commerce minister is "questioning my professionalism".

India: Nobel winner Abhijit Banerjee visits alma mater JNU

New Delhi, Oct 19 (PTI) Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee visited his alma mater Jawaharlal Nehru University on Saturday.

Banerjee, who completed his Masters in economics from JNU in 1983, arrived in the university early in the morning and later met Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, sources said.

There was, however, no word from administration officials on his visit.

India: Fake notes of Rs 4.64 L dumped at Delhi Metro station

New Delhi, Oct 20 (PTI) Fake Indian currency notes (FICN) of the face value of Rs 4.64 lakh have been found in a bag at a Delhi Metro station by CISF personnel, officials said on Sunday.

They said an unclaimed bag containing the FICN was recovered on Saturday evening at the Kashmere Gate station when CISF personnel were carrying out routine anti-sabotage checks at the public transport facility.

The bag, containing Rs 4.64 lakh FICN, was recovered from near the gate no 8 of the station.
