NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s top court on Wednesday took up legal challenges to the government’s decision to revoke Indian-controlled Kashmir’s special status and asked the government to explain its stance to the court.

The Supreme Court ordered the federal government to file its replies to 14 petitions and inform the court about the media restrictions imposed in Kashmir. It said five judges will start a regular hearing on the matter in October.

Kanpur: Two bogies of a MEMU train derailed at Kanpur Central station on Wednesday morning. No casualties have been reported so far. The bogies are being removed from the track. The traffic has been disrupted due to this derailmeñt.

According to the available news report the local train Memu no 64201 derailed just as it arrived on platform no 3. The speed was not fast so there were no casualties.

The railways removed the passengers from the derailed bogies. There was much ruckus on the station. The pillars were damaged. 

Lucknow, Aug 26; GANASHAKTI: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday slammed the BJP-led Centre, saying it is trying to give a new definition to democracy by using the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax department.

These have become "new institutions" under the BJP, he told reporters at the Samajwadi Party headquarters here.

"One should learn institutional control from the BJP. No government has done it earlier. ED, CBI and fear--this is new democracy.

Jammu, Aug 27 (PTI) Dogra Sadar Sabha president and former minister Gulchain Singh Charak was on Tuesday detained ahead of his scheduled press conference here.

Charak had reached his party headquarters at Dogra Hall in the city to address a press conference and was picked up by police without citing any reason, his son Gambhir Dev Singh Charak said.

Gangtok/Kolkata, Aug 27 (PTI) The Sikkim government has urged the Centre to withdraw its notification which opened up 24 peaks of the state to mountaineers, a top official said.

The Centre has recently allowed mountaineering and trekking in 137 peaks across the country, including 24 peaks in Sikkim, in a bid to boost tourism.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Monday agreed to hear on Tuesday a PIL seeking direction to the Centre to constitute a judicial commission or a high level expert committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for securing gender justice, equality and dignity of women.

The plea was mentioned before a bench a Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar which tagged it for hearing along with a similar pending petition.

Mumbai, Aug 26 (PTI) A 35-year-old man, who allegedly molested minor girls on multiple occasions in Mumbai, has been arrested, a police official said on Monday.

Sachin Anant Shama, a resident of Bhatwadi area in suburban Ghatkopar, used to lure the girls by offering them chocolates and ice cream, he said.

Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap and nabbed him from Ghatkopar last Thursday, he said.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) American aerospace major Boeing on Monday delivered the 11th C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force, boosting its strategic airlift capabilities.

The C-17 Globemaster III is a premier transport aircraft. The massive, sturdy, long-haul aircraft can carry large combat equipment, troops and humanitarian aid across long distances in all weather conditions.

Lucknow, Aug 26 (PTI) The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary after taking cognisance of the salt and rotis served to children in their midday meal at a government-run primary school in Mirzapur, according to a statement.

The commission has sought a detailed report in the matter within four weeks, the statement said.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump has dealt a "final blow" to Pakistan over its attempt to corner India on the Kashmir issue, the BJP said on Monday.

"Pakistan's propaganda was dealt the final blow in the meeting between the PM and President Trump. Pakistan was hoping to get some statement which will give it a last ray of hope. The meeting has categorically confirmed that any issue concerning India and Pakistan has to be discussed bilaterally," BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao said.
