India: 2 SP leaders shot dead in UP

Noida/Jaunpur (UP), May 31 (PTI) Two Samajwadi Party leaders were shot dead by unidentified persons in separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, police said, ruling out any political rivalry in both the cases.

Lalji Yadav, 41, was shot dead around 9.30 am near Siddiquepur in Khwaja Sarai area of Jaunpur district. He was travelling on his SUV on the Shahganj-Jaunpur road and had stopped to talk to someone when by three motorcycle-borne men intercepted the vehicle and opened fire, the police said.

India: Undertrial prisoner escapes from UP jail

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jun 1 (PTI) An undertrial prisoner escaped from the Muzaffarnagar district jail in Uttar Pradesh, officials said Saturday.

The inmate, Dilshad, fled from the prison on Friday, jail superintendent A K Saxena said, adding that a case has been registered and a hunt launched to nab him.

The authorities have also ordered a departmental inquiry to ascertain how could the prisoner evade security and flee from the prison.

Dilshad was arrested on May 26 in neighbouring Shamli district.

India: Cong reviewing defeat of Rahul Gandhi in Amethi

Amethi, Jun 1 (PTI) The Congress is reviewing the defeat of its president Rahul Gandhi in the party stronghold of Amethi in the Lok Sabha elections, a party leader said Tuesday.

Zubair Khan, who looks after the political work of party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Kishori Lal Sharma, the representative of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, have been camping here for the last three days to deliberate upon the possible reasons for Gandhi's defeat.

India: Samajwadi Party leader shot at in Greater Noida

Noida (UP), Jun 1 (PTI) A Samajwadi Party politician has been shot at by unidentified men in Greater Noida, within 12 hours of the killing of a local party unit chief in Gautam Buddh Nagar, police said Saturday.

The incident took place late on Friday night when Brajpal Rathi, the party's district secretary was returning to his house in Eta sector in an SUV accompanied by a friend and driver, the police said.

India: Sonia Gandhi elected leader of Congress Parliamentary Party

New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI) Sonia Gandhi was once again elected leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) at a meeting of party MPs at the Central Hall of Parliament on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by the party's 52 newly elected Lok Sabha MPs and Rajya Sabha members.

Gandhi, who represents Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli in Lok Sabha, is the chairperson of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

BJP looses Karnataka Local Body elections

In less than a week after LS elections where BJP won 25 of 28 seats in the state, and only 2 days after forming government at the Centre, it has lost Karnataka Local Body elections. Though counting is still underway, Congress is in a comfortable lead by winning 509 seats against BJP’s 366.

The elections to 1,361 wards, spread across eight city municipal councils, 33 town municipal councils and 22 town panchayats, were held on May 29.

Youth hangs himself to death at park

Kanpur: One youth ended his life by hanging with the banyan tree at a park here on Friday morning. He was disappointed with his father's scolding. 

Even the police also said that he took recourse to suicide by hanging after the scolding. 

His father Kunwar Lam, a dairy owner in Barra area scolded his 20-year-old younger son Rakesh Kumar for his sleeping habit in the day-time. This led him to take extreme step. When his whereabouts began by the family members they came to know of his hanging. The police brought his body down. 

India: Allocated funds for farmers are held by UP gov

Lucknow, May 30; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Funds under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi could not be transferred to 1.5 lakh farmers in Uttar Pradesh due to "data mismatch" and they will soon receive funds after the problem is rectified, UP Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi said Thursday.

Terming the scheme as a “game changer”, Shahi said  welfare schemes implemented for villagers and farmers resulted in massive support for the BJP in the polls.

Reward for serving Indian Army: Kargil veteran declared foreigner, detained

Itanagar; GANASHAKTI: A retired Army officer in Assam has been detained and sent to a detention camp after a Foreigners' Tribunal declared him a foreign national.

Md Sana Ullah, a resident of Guwahati, was detained from his house in Satgaon by the police on Tuesday after the Tribunal at Boko passed the order declaring him as a foreigner and sent him to detention camp.

Ullah spoke to Reuters as he was being taken into a police vehicle to be sent to the detention centre in the town of Goalpara. He said he felt heartbroken.

India: Not Suicide, Mumbai ST Doctor Was Murdered

Mumbai; GANASHAKTI: The post-mortem report of doctor Payal Tadavi, who was found dead in her hostel room recently, has revealed evidence of a ligature mark around her neck.

Under ''provisional cause of death'', the post-mortem report stated ''evidence of ligature mark over neck,'' the ANI reported. 

Three senior doctors, accused of tormenting 26-year-old Payal with casteist slurs and abetting her suicide, were arrested on Tuesday.
