India: Dalit man stripped, thrashed in Karnataka

Vijayapura (Karnataka), July 20 (PTI) A Dalit man was stripped and thrashed by a group of people in this district in Karnataka for allegedly touching the motorbike of another community member, police said on Monday.

As a video of the incident went viral on social media, a counter-complaint was lodged, claiming he was assaulted for teasing two girls of Minajagi village, a police official said.

Two people had been arrested and further investigation was on into both complaints, District Superintendent of Police Anupam Agrawal said.

India: Mangaluru city, surburbs deserted on total lockdown day

Mangaluru, Jul 5 (PTI) Mangaluru city and suburban areas in Dakshina Kannada wore a deserted look on Sunday with the people fully backing the total lockdown clamped by the district administration in the wake of increasing number of coronavirus cases.

The total lockdown is set to continue on all Sundays till August 2 unless otherwise notified.

Shops and business establishments were closed and vehicles kept off the roads.

Only essential services, including hospitals, ambulance services and supply of essential items are allowed.

India: 'Cyanide' Mohan gets life sentence in 20th murder case

Mangaluru, Jun 25 (PTI) "Cyanide" Mohan, a serial killer who has murdered several women using the deadly chemical after befriending and raping them, has been sentenced by a court here to life imprisonment for raping and murdering a woman from Kerala in 2009.

Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Sayeednunnisa pronounced the quantum of sentence on Wednesday.

The 57-year old Mohan was convicted of murder on Saturday.

The case is the 20th and last in the series of murder cases against him.

India: Ex Amnesty Int'l official booked for "offensive" remarks

Bengaluru, Jun 5 (PTI) A case has been registered against former Executive Director of human rights advocacy group Amnesty International Aakar Patel for posting an "offensive" content on social media, which allegedly sought to instigate a section of people against the government.

The case was registered on Tuesday following a complaint by the police inspector of JC Nagar police station alleging that the twitter post by Patel was "offensive."

India: Karnataka to open temples from June 1

Bengaluru, May 26 (PTI) Temples in Karnataka, closed for over two months due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown, will be opened for public from June 1, making the southern state the first in the country to allow devotees in shrines ever since the curbs kicked in.

The national lockdown enforced by the Centre to stem the spread of Coronavirus since March 25, and in its fourth leg now, is slated till May 31.

India: 2 police stations sealed after COVID-19 infects cop

Bengaluru, May 22 (PTI): Two police stations here have been sealed partially after a head constable was tested positive for COVID-19.

According to police, the infected head constable was overseeing the arrangements to quarantine people who came from Mumbai.

"Yes," Superintendent of Police of Mandya district Parashurama K told PTI when asked about the head constable being tested positive for COVID-19.

He said the two police stations have been sealed to disinfect them.

Underworld don Muthappa Rai passes away

Bengaluru, May 15 (PTI) Reformed underworld don N Muthappa Rai died battling cancer at a private hospital here on Friday, hospital sources said.

Rai, 68, was suffering from brain cancer for the past one year and was admitted at Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road, where he died at 1.34 am, they said.

Rai is survived by two sons.

"After a prolonged illness and hospitalisation, we regret to inform the demise of 68 years Mr Muthappa Rai.

India: Hundreds of migrant workers protest at railway station

Mangaluru, May 8 (PTI) Hundreds of migrant workers belonging to northern states on Friday staged a protest in front of the central railway station here demanding that arrangements be made for them to return to home towns.

The crowding of workers at the railway station is learnt to be prompted by a social media post which went viral giving false information that free special trains have been arranged for workers, sources said.

In the first incident, a man in his mid-thirties was stabbed to death by his friend after an altercation between them at a party organised to celebrate the resumption of alcohol sale in Bengaluru on Monday.

India: BJP's Anantkumar Hegde says his Twitter account blocked

Bengaluru, Apr 26 (PTI) Former Union minister and controversial BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde on Sunday said his Twitter account has been blocked and accused the microblogging siite of taking an 'anti-India stand' and acting "with very prejudiced intentions'.

The MP from Uttara Kannada has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi against the 'Digital colonisation' by a a corporate entity.
