MAPUTO, April 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A shadowy militant group that has terrorised northern Mozambique killed 52 villagers on April 7 after locals refused to be recruited to their ranks, according to police cited by local media Tuesday.

“Recently, the criminals tried to recruit young people to join their ranks, but there was resistance on the part of the youths. This provoked the anger of the criminals, who indiscriminately killed — cruelly and diabolically — 52 young people,” police spokesman Orlando Mudumane told the state-owned broadcasting service.

MAPUTO, April 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) — One of Brazil’s most wanted criminals has been sent home from Mozambique to face justice.

Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos was allegedly a leader of one of Brazil’s most powerful criminal groups – São Paulo-based First Capital Command (PCC) drug gang.

The alleged drug baron known as ‘Fuminho’, had been on the run for more than two decades.

He is accused of overseeing the flow of cocaine around the world.

MAPUTO, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — One of Brazil’s most wanted criminals has been arrested in Mozambique after spending more than two decades on the run, officials say.

Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos, known as Fuminho, is accused of running drug trafficking operations for one of Brazil’s most powerful gangs.

The 49-year-old was arrested in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, on Monday in an international sting operation.

It was carried out by Interpol, US drug officials and Brazilian federal police.

MAPUTO, March 30 (Xinhua) -- President of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi on Monday declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19 for 30 days, starting from April 1.

In his speech to the nation, broadcast live on national television and radio, the president said the decision had been sent to the parliament for ratification.

MAPUTO, March 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Insurgents have attacked a second town in the gas-rich northern province in Mozambique where foreign companies are working on a $60bn natural gas project.

The militants attacked the town of Quissanga at dawn on Wednesday, two days after they attacked Mocimboa de Praia town in the province of Cabo Delgado.

The district police headquarters was raided and destroyed during the attack, a police officer said.

MAPUTO (Reuters) - Sixty-four people believed to be migrants from Ethiopia have been found dead in a container attached to a truck in Mozambique, provincial migration authorities and the police said on Tuesday.

Police and immigration authorities stopped the truck en route from Malawi in the early hours of the morning in the province of Tete, bordered by Malawi on one side and Zimbabwe on the other, they said.

MAPUTO, Oct 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mozambique’s presidential candidates ended their 43-days of campaign on Sunday as the country prepares for Tuesday’s elections.

President Filipe Nyusi, who is seeking a second term, started the last campaign day in Nampula in the northeast and ended in Matola suburb in the capital, Maputo, in front of thousands of supporters.

His Frelimo party has ruled Mozambique since independence in 1975.

26 Apr 2019; DW: The powerful cyclone Kenneth claimed its first casualty in Mozambique when a woman was killed by a falling tree in the city of Pemba on Friday. Previously, the storm had killed at least three people in the Comoros, the island nation off the coast of Africa.

Pemba was struggling with power outages and power lines were also reportedly down in other communities in the north of the country.

BEIRA, 2 Apr 2019; AA: Turkey's state-run relief agency set up a tent city for people in Mozambique, hit hard by last month’s deadly tropical Cyclone Idai.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) built the tent city with the support of other agencies, including National Medical Search Team (UMKE) and Search and Rescue Association (AKUT) as well as the charity group Turkiye Diyanet Foundation in the Tica town near the central Beira city.
