Striking Nigerian doctors to embark on nationwide protest over unmet demands by country’s leader

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Striking Nigerian doctors on Saturday said they will embark on a nationwide protest, accusing the country’s newly elected president of ignoring their demands for better pay, better work conditions and payment of owed earnings.

The protest, scheduled to start on Wednesday, adds to other challenges confronting Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who is leading efforts by the West Africa regional bloc of ECOWAS — which he chairs — to restore democracy in Niger after last week’s coup.

At least 103 bodies were gathered from across the state after the protests and other clashes related to it, the top official at Lagos State’s ministry of health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, said in a statement after local media reported a leaked memo about the planned burial.

Nigerian anti-drug agency seizes over 5000 kg of cannabis in operations

LAGOS, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's anti-drug agency has seized more than 5000 kilograms of cannabis in two operations in the past week in Lagos, the country's economic hub, and arrested two suspects for alleged ties to a drug trafficking network.

The operations were carried out in the Lekki area of Lagos between Monday and Tuesday based on credible intelligence, according to a statement from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Sunday.

Islamic militants kill 7 farmers in northeast Nigeria, further threatening food supplies

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Islamic extremist rebels killed at least seven farmers in northeast Nigeria, an attack that further threatens food security in the hard-hit region, local authorities told The Associated Press on Friday.

The militants attacked the farmers on Thursday as they worked on their crop fields near Borno state’s Molai area, the authorities said.

Nigeria's security agency detains suspended central bank governor

LAGOS, June 10 (Reuters) - Nigeria's suspended central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele has been detained and is being held in custody for investigative reasons, the police's Department of State Services (DSS) said on Saturday.

The country's new President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele with immediate effect on Friday, a measure the government said was linked to an ongoing probe of the governor's office and to planned reforms in the financial sector.

Nigeria begins probe of crash-landing incident involving domestic airline

ABUJA, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Monday announced that it has launched an investigation into a crash-landing incident involving a domestic airline in the country.

The incident occurred Sunday when an aircraft, operated by the local Max Air, which was carrying more than 144 passengers, made a crash-landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, after losing its landing wheels.

Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, as all passengers and crew members on board were safely evacuated.

Nigeria court hears opposition’s presidential vote challenge

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — A Nigerian court on Monday began its hearing on separate suits filed by the opposition to challenge the incumbent party’s victory in the country’s presidential election.

The presidential tribunal at the Court of Appeal in the capital, Abuja, heard the opening statements of lawyers representing opposition parties, which are the challenging the outcome of the February vote won by Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

15 killed in Nigeria bus-truck collision

LAGOS, April 9 (Xinhua) -- At least fifteen people were killed Saturday when a bus and a truck collided head-on along a busy highway in the southern part of Nigeria, local traffic police said Sunday.

Bisi Kazeem, the national spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, disclosed this in a statement and said the accident took place at the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway at about 8:20 p.m., local time.
