Rwanda-UK deal on asylum-seekers draws mixed reactions

KIGALI, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Local reactions to a Rwanda-Britain deal to move asylum-seekers attempting to enter the United Kingdom to Rwanda for resettlement were mostly positive, with some expressing reservations.

The agreement was signed by British Home Secretary Priti Patel and Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, on Thursday.

Rwanda imposes restrictions for unvaccinated people

KIGALI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- With Christmas and New Year holidays around the corner, the Rwandan government has imposed restrictions for unvaccinated people in the country, excluding them from indoor restaurants, worship places, public transport and bars starting on Dec. 20 to minimize the spread of coronavirus and encourage vaccine skeptics to get their jabs.

The measures were announced by the office of the Prime Minister on Monday and will be reviewed upon health assessment.

Rwanda suspends direct flights with southern Africa over new COVID-19 variant

KIGALI, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda has temporarily suspended direct flights with southern African countries due to concerns over the new COVID-19 variant Omicron, according to a cabinet communique issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The decision was made late on Sunday after an extraordinary cabinet meeting on Rwanda's response to the Omicron variant chaired by President Paul Kagame, according to the communique.

Rwanda parades 13 terror suspects

KIGALI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Rwanda National Police on Friday paraded to the media 13 suspected terrorists who were plotting to commit terrorist attacks in different parts of the country.

The 13 terror suspects were arrested in the city of Kigali, Rusizi and Nyabihu districts in the Western Province. Rwanda police worked with other security organs in dismantling this terror cell, said the police in a statement.

According to police, investigations revealed that the terror cell is linked to Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a terror group affiliated to ISIS.

New agreements between Rwanda and Tanzania to give impetus to joint projects like railway

KIGALI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Monday said cooperation agreements signed between his country and Tanzania earlier in the day will give new impetus to the implementation of joint projects like standard gauge railway.

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu starts 2-day official visit to Rwanda Monday

KIGALI, Aug 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Tanzanian President Samia Suhulu arrive Monday in Kigali for her first visit to Rwanda.

During the two-day visit, she is expected to hold private talks with President Paul Kagame.

President Suluhu’s visit follows recent high-level meetings between top officials from the two countries.

Covid-19: Rwanda receives donation of vaccines, medical supplies from UAE

KIGALI, July 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Rwanda has received a consignment of Covid-19 vaccines and medical kits from the United Arab Emirates government.

The kits that were received on Saturday consisted Covid-19 vaccines, medical beds, personal protective equipment, coveralls and ventilators.

Commenting about the donation, Dr Daniel Ngamije, the Minister of Health said that the medical donation is expected to speed up the Covid-19 pandemic fight.

Rwanda receives 133 more asylum seekers from Libya

KIGALI, July 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 285 asylum seekers who were stranded in Libya and hosted in Rwanda have been relocated to third countries, the Rwandan government said.

It comes as a new group of 133 asylum seekers arrived in the East African country.

Upon arrival early Friday, the sixth group was subjected to coronavirus tests before being sent to the Gashora Emergency Transit Centre in eastern Rwanda.

The evacuated asylum seekers, including women and children, are from Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.

COVID-19 Positive Students To Sit For National Exams In Rwanda

KIGALI, Jul 12 (NNN-IRIN) – Students being treated for COVID-19 under home-based care in Rwanda, are to sit for their national examinations under strict health protocols, the country’s education ministry, said.

All examination centres will set up a separate examination room, which will be disinfected every day, for these students, the ministry said, in guidelines published yesterday.
