Lebanese protest rise in poverty amid covid lockdown

27 Jan 2021; MEMO: Anti-lockdown protesters clashed with police in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli last night, leaving 45 injured.

At least nine were taken to hospital for treatment by the Lebanese Red Cross following the clashes.

Protesters targeted government offices, torched a military vehicle and blocked the city's main square.

The army was deployed to contain the demonstrators, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported.

India: Investors' wealth plunge over Rs 8 lakh cr in four days

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) Investors' wealth eroded by more than Rs 8 lakh crore in four consecutive sessions of stock market loss.

Recordings its fourth straight session of loss on Wednesday, the Sensex tumbled 937.66 points or 1.94 per cent to close at 47,409.93. In the four straight sessions, the benchmark has fallen by 2,382.19 points or 4.78 per cent.

India: Heavy security cover at Delhi borders following farmers tractor parade

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Delhi border points remained under heavy police deployment on Thursday in the aftermath of the violence that broke out during farmers' tractor parade in the national capital on Republic Day, officials said.

Security personnel have also been deployed at the Red Fort, they said.

India: Take anti-agriculture laws back immediately: Rahul

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) A day after violence during the farmers' tractor rally in the national capital, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appealed to the Narendra Modi government on Wednesday to repeal, what he claimed were, "anti-agriculture" laws.

Taking to Twitter, he also shared a quote by Mahatma Gandhi -- "In a gentle way, you can shake the world."

Iran-Turkey railway aims for 1M tons of cargo in 2021

27 Jan 2021; MEMO: Roughly 1 million tons of cargo are to be transported via rail between Turkey and Iran this year, Turkish authorities said Tuesday, reports Anadolu Agency.

The Transport and Infrastructure Ministry said in a statement that a recent memorandum of understanding signed in a gathering of railway representatives in Turkey's capital Ankara on January 12-13 would open a new era for the transit railway.

Kuwait rejects Moderna's conditions for supplying covid vaccine

27 Jan 2021; MEMO: Kuwait's Health Ministry yesterday rejected the conditions proposed by the American company, Moderna, under which it would supply the Gulf state with the coronavirus vaccine.

Official sources told Al-Qabas that the conditions had included the company's failure to supply "specific quantities of the vaccine, as well as the lack of the ministry's right to return 30 per cent of the doses in case they were not used."

Tiktok to shut down India business

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) Chinese social media firm Bytedance, which owns Tiktok and Helo apps, has announced the closure of its India business following continued restrictions on its services in the country.

Tiktok's global interim head Vanessa Pappas and vice president for global business solutions Blake Chandlee in a joint email to employees have communicated the decision of the company that it is reducing team size and the decision will impact all employees in India.
