India: Petrol, diesel prices hiked again

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) Petrol and diesel prices on Thursday were hiked by 25 paise per litre each, the second straight day of increase in rates that took the prices to new highs.

Petrol now costs Rs 84.70 per litre in Delhi and diesel is priced at Rs 74.88, according to a price notification from oil marketing companies.

This is the second straight day of a price increase. Rates were hiked by 25 paise each on Wednesday after a five-day hiatus.

India: Centre should scrap new farm laws: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Jan 14 (PTI) The Shiv Sena on Thursday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour the sentiments of protesting farmers and scrap new controversial farm laws, and said he will "grow bigger" in stature by doing so.

An editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' also accused the Centre of trying to end the farmers' protest by using the Supreme Court as the front.

US to block cotton from China region targeted in crackdown

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government announced Wednesday that it will halt imports of cotton and tomatoes from the Uighur region of China in its most sweeping action yet to pressure the Communist Party over its campaign against ethnic minorities.

Officials said Customs and Border Protection will use its authority to block products suspected of being produced with forced labor to keep out cotton, tomatoes and related products from the Xinjiang region of northwest China.

Arab states want Lebanon PM Hariri to mediate between Turkey, Saudi Arabia

13 Jan 2021; MEMO: Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri's recent visit to Turkey came with an Arab mandate to open the doors of mediation between Ankara and Riyadh, Lebanon's Al-Jadeed TV channel reported.

Hariri's unannounced visit to Istanbul and his "private meeting" with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this week aimed to open the doors of mediation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, with Emirati approval, the station said.

India: Covaxin shipped to 11 cities in India- Bharat Biotech

Hyderabad, Jan 13 (PTI): Bharat Biotech said on Wednesday that it has successfully air-shipped its COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin to 11 cities in India in the early hours and that it has donated 16.5 lakh doses to the centre.

The company also expressed its deepest gratitude to the nation, all clinical trial volunteers and its partners for making this a successful and milestone public-private partnership for the development of India's first COVID19- vaccine, a press release said.

India: Farmers in Punjab burn copies of farm laws on Lohri

Chandigarh, Jan 13 (PTI) Farmers in Punjab on Wednesday burnt copies of the Centre's three new farm laws at several places on the festival of Lohri as a mark of protest against the legislations.

The harvest festival of Lohri is celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and other parts of north India. Bonfires are an important part of the festivities.

India: Farmer leaders welcome SC staying 3 agri laws but protest to continue

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) Farmer leaders welcomed the Supreme Court order to stay the implementation of three farm laws on Tuesday, but said they would not call off their protest until the legislations are repealed.

The Sankyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of around 40 protesting farmer unions, has called a meeting later in the day to decide the next course of action.

Indian Supreme Court stays implementation of contentious new farm laws

Delhi; 12 January 2021 (UMMN): Indian Supreme Court has stayed implementation of three new farm laws that is fiercely opposed by the farmers.

“We are staying three farm laws until further orders,” Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad A. Bobde said.

The stay on their implementation means the Centre cannot proceed with any executive actions to enforce the laws.
