Indian PM Modi, Nobel laureate Banerjee hold discussions

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held a "healthy and extensive" interaction on various subjects.

Banerjee, an Indian-born American professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has won Nobel in economics, jointly with wife Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer for "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty".

New blow to Johnson’s Brexit plan after vote on deal blocked

LONDON (AP) — Britain faced another week of grinding political gridlock after Prime Minister Boris Johnson was denied a chance Monday to hold a vote by lawmakers on his Brexit divorce bill.

With just 10 days before Britain’s scheduled departure date, Johnson’s government had sought a “straight up-and-down vote” on the agreement he struck last week with the 27 other EU nations laying out the terms of Britain’s exit.

India: Reliance Jio adds 1.85 lakh Kolkata subscribers in August

Kolkata, Oct 20 (PTI) Telecom operator Reliance Jio has added 1.85 lakh subscribers in August in the city, a company statement said.

The gain in subscribers' base has been fuelled by "fast expansion of its all 4G network coverage and popular Jiophone", it said.

As per TRAI report, the subscriber base stands at 95.84 lakhs as of August, the company said in a statement.

India: 360 infra projects show cost overruns of Rs 3.88 lakh cr

New Delhi, Oct 20 (PTI) As many as 360 infrastructure projects, each worth Rs 150 crore or more, have shown cost overruns to the tune of over Rs 3.88 lakh crore owing to delays and other reasons, a report said.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation monitors infrastructure projects worth Rs 150 crore and above. Of these 1,608 projects, 360 reported cost overruns and 550 time escalation.

Pakistan: Manmohan Singh to attend Kartarpur Corridor inauguration: Qureshi

Islamabad, Oct 20 (PTI) Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh would attend the Kartarpur Corridor inauguration ceremony on November 9 as a common man.

Qureshi told reporters in his home town Multan on Saturday that Singh has accepted his invitation and would attend the scheduled opening as a common man rather than as a special guest, Dawn newspaper reported.

"He is welcome even as a common participant," Qureshi said.

Pakistan will achieve all FATF targets in time: Qureshi

Islamabad, Oct 20 (PTI) The Pakistan government will achieve all targets sets by the Financial Action Task Force in time to get the country out of the anti-money laundering watchdog's grey list, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said as he accused India of trying to blacklist it.

Qureshi's remarks came after the Paris-based FATF put Pakistan on notice on Friday, warning that it will be blacklisted if it does not control terror funding by February.

Indi: Punjab CM wants $20 service fee Kartarpur corridor waved

Chandigarh, Oct 18 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday appealed to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to withdraw the USD 20 service fee imposed by his government on pilgrims visiting the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara.

"I appeal to @ImranKhanPTI to withdraw $20 fee imposed by @PakGovernment on pilgrims to Kartarpur Sahib to facilitate 'khulle darshan deedar' of the final resting place of Guru Nanak Ji Sahib. The world Sikh community will be grateful for this gesture on the part of Islamabad," Amarinder said in tweet.

India: Guj CM on 5-day visit to Uzbekistan from Saturday

Ahmedabad, Oct 18 (PTI) Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will head a business delegation on a five-day visit of Uzbekistan from Saturday, an official said.

He would attend the 1st International Investment Forum 'Open Andijan' on Saturday, and then take part in the naming ceremony of a street there after Sardar Patel and unveil a statue of the late leader, he said.

The CM will inaugurate a Cadila Pharmaceuticals plant and a Sharda University campus in Andijan, and meet business leaders in Samarkand city.
