Oil unease: Alaska faces tough budget decisions

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Daniel Bowen came to Alaska in 2011, looking for adventure and opportunity. He and his wife eventually settled on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage, a salmon fishing haven calling itself “Alaska’s Playground.”

But the Bowens, both teachers, recently returned to their native Michigan. After years of stress over delayed state budgets, their breaking point, he said, was Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s proposed reductions to K-12 spending and health and social service programs.

British PM Johnson plans visa shake-up to attract science talent

LONDON, Aug 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled plans for a new fast-track visa route for “the brightest and best”, in a bid to attract the world’s top scientists to Britain after Brexit.

The “shake-up” of immigration rules is aimed at encouraging elite researchers and specialists in science, engineering and technology to immigrate, the premier’s Downing Street office said in a statement.

Malaysia files charges against 17 current, ex-Goldman execs

Pakistan FM visiting China to discuss Indo-Pak tensions over Kashmir

Islamabad, Aug 9 (PTI) Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday dashed to China to discuss with the Chinese leadership Indo-Pak tensions after India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier this week, India revoked Article 370 to withdraw the special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the region into two Union Territories --Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh.

Pakistan termed the Indian action as "unilateral and illegal", and said it will take the matter to the UN Security Council.

Uruguayan university opens center to foster China-LatAm trade

MONTEVIDEO, Aug 8 (NNN-EFE) — The University of Montevideo’s Business School on Wednesday launched a new China-Latin American Studies Center for Trade and Business that will seek, among other things, to be a “power plant of ideas” to improve relations between Latin America and the Asian giant.

The center’s director, Nicolas Santo, spoke with EFE, saying that although the facility will aim to improve overall relations between Latin American and China, the focus will be on Uruguay “to be able to provide added value to (bilateral) trade and investment links.”
