Israel-India shares close bond: Ambassador Malka

Khetri (Assam), Nov 2 (PTI) Israels Ambassador to India Ron Malka on Monday said his country shares a close bond of friendship with India and the two countries complement each other.

Underlining the close bond between the two countries in recent years, he said it extended to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

India: Caches of arms, ammunition found in Assam

Kajalgaon (Assam), Oct 29 (PTI) Two caches of arms and ammunition were recovered from Runikhata police station area in Assams Chirang district on Thursday, police said.

An AK-47 rifle with ammunition, 50 rounds of live 7.62 mm ammunition and a pen pistol were found from Ranipur locality, while a 9 mm carbine with a magazine, seven pistols with magazines, two Chinese hand grenades and 25 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from Amlaguri.

India: Assam to close down govt madrassas, Sanskrit tols

Guwahati, Oct 17 (PTI) All government-run madrassas and Sanskrit tols (schools) will be closed down by the Assam government and the notification to this effect will be issued in November, state Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.

The State Madrassa Education Board, Assam will be dissolved and all the government-run madrassas will be converted into high schools, he said.

New admissions will be held for the existing students as regular ones, he said.

India: Top UPRF terrorist killed in encounter in Assam: Police

Guwahati/Diphu, Oct 6 (PTI) Martin Guite, the self-styled 'chairman' of militant outfit United People's Revolutionary Front (UPRF), has been killed in a night-long encounter in Assam's Karbi Anglong district, police said on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team launched a search operation in the forests of Singhasan Hill on Monday night, a senior police officer from Karbi Anglong said.

India: Three of six people who raped an Assam woman arrested

Coimbatore, Oct 1 (PTI) Three of six people, who allegedly raped a guest woman worker in nearby Tirupur district, were arrested on Thursday, police said.

Search is on for the others,they said.

The 22-year-old woman, hailing from Assam and staying at Sarsavanapatti in the city, in her complaint said she had sought a job from Rajeshkumar, a person whom she knew while working at a mill in Tirupur, as she was living alone after being deserted by her husband.

India: Ex-chief of Bodo council slams peace accord

Guwahati, Aug 25 (PTI) Former Bodoland Territorial Council chief executive member Hagrama Mohilary claimed on Tuesday that the Bodo Accord, signed early this year, was not a good pact and its implication might lead to conflicts between different communities living in Assam.

Mohilary, who himself signed the accord as witness, said if the agreement was implemented, then it would bring many problems to the Bodo tribals.

India: Second attempt to cap OIL gas well fails

Guwahati, Aug 10 (PTI) The second attempt to shut Oil India's damaged well at Baghjan in Assam, which has been spewing gas uncontrollably for 76 days, failed on Monday when the iron cable to lift the lid snapped, the PSU said.

This was the second attempt in ten days.

The company said in a statement that when the blow out preventer (BOP) stack alignment was underway to insert the studs one of the two bull lines connected with the Athey Wagon, the equipment for fighting oil field fire which was lifting it, came out from the socket due to excessive heat.

India: Journalist killed in his office in Assam

Tinsukia, Aug 8 (PTI) A journalist was found dead in his office in Assam's Tinsukia district on Saturday, police said.

Bijendeep Tanti, the owner of news website 'Dinpratidin', was found dead with injuries on his body in his office in the Jyotinagar area, they said.

A woman, who was reportedly last seen with him, has been held for interrogation, official sources said.

Police said they are probing the case from "all angles".

The body has been sent for post-mortem, they said.

India: NIA court rejects peasant leader Akhil Gogoi's bail plea

Guwahati, Aug 7 (PTI) A special NIA court on Friday rejected the bail application of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, who was arrested for his alleged role in a violent protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam.

"The court rejected the bail application. We are yet to study the detailed judgement and find out the cause of rejection. Accordingly, we will move the High Court in next seven days," Gogoi's advocate Santanu Borthakur told PTI here.

India: Dummy run to cap well spewing gas uncontrollably for two months

Dibrugarh, Jul 29 (PTI) Oil India Limited (OIL) is planning dummy run of the final capping operation and subsequent killing operation at its Baghjan oilfield in Assam where a well is spewing gas for over two months.

Considering the critical nature of the operations, a dummy run is being planned to be carried out with heavy machinery before the final capping, a release issued by the energy major said.
