India: Maruti sells zero units in domestic market in April

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Friday said it did not sell a single unit in the domestic market last month due to coronavirus-led nationwide lockdown.

The company had zero sales in the domestic market in April 2020, MSI said in a statement.

India: Govt to de-seal containment zone in east Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) The Delhi government on Thursday decided to de-seal a COVID-19 containment zone in east district as it has not reported any fresh case in the last four weeks.

Vardhaman Apartment in east Delhi is the second containment zone to be de-sealed by the government, according to an official statement. The first one was Mansara Apartment, which is also in east district.

"It was possible after successful implementation of Delhi government's 'Operation SHIELD', it stated.

Indian Govt allows movement of stranded migrant workers with conditions

New Delhi, Apr 29 (PTI) Migrant workers, tourists, students and other people stranded in different parts of the country due to the ongoing lockdown were on Wednesday allowed to move to their respective destinations with certain conditions, giving a big relief to the distressed people.

The Union Home Ministry also said it has reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the country and found that tremendous gains were achieved during the lockdown and new guidelines will be issued soon, giving considerable relaxations to many districts from May 4.

India: BJP slams Delhi Minority Commission Chairman's remarks

New Delhi, Apr 29 (PTI) The BJP on Wednesday slammed Delhi Minority Commission Chairman Zafarul-Islam Khan's reported controversial remarks on social media "thanking" Kuwait for its "support" to Indian Muslims, and demanded that he be sacked.

"The Delhi Minorities Commission Chief Mr Khan has drafted and posted an 'anti-India' letter on his social media. The letter is anti-India as it is against the basic tenets of the Indian Constitution," BJP's national spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged in a statement.

India: MHA gives broad hints of extending lockdown beyond May 3

New Delhi, Apr 29 (PTI) The Centre on Wednesday gave clear indications that the ongoing nationwide lockdown will be extended beyond May 3 but with "considerable relaxations" to people and services in "many districts".

The Ministry of Home Affairs, however, said there was a need to maintain a strict lockdown till May 3 so that the gains are not squandered away.

The nationwide lockdown was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 in a bid to combat the coronavirus threat. It was further extended till May 3.

India: Following Centre, Delhi govt freezes DA, DR for its employees, pensioners

New Delhi, Apr 29 (PTI) The Delhi government has put on hold hike in inflation-linked allowance for around 2.2 lakh employees and pensioners till July 2021, following a similar step by the Centre.

The dearness allowance for employees and dearness relief for pensioners were due from January 2020.

India needs to open economy in measured way: Rajan

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) India needs to be cleverer in lifting the lockdown and open up its economy in a "measured way" soon as it does not have the capacity to support people across the spectrum for too long, former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan said on Thursday.

He was deliberating on the economic impact of the COVID-19 in a conversation with former Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday remembered Rishi Kapoor as a wonderful actor, while noting that it has been a terrible week for Indian cinema with the passing away of another legend.

Kapoor, who was suffering from cancer, died in a Mumbai hospital. The death of the veteran actor comes a day after versatile actor Irrfan Khan died in Mumbai.

India: COVID-19 death toll rises to 1,074; cases 33,050

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) The death toll due to the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 1,074 after 66 more fatalities and the number of cases climbed to 33,050 in the country on Thursday, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 23,651, while 8,324 people have recovered, and one patient has migrated. The total number of cases include 111 foreign nationals, the ministry said.
