New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI) A 25-year-old man set himself ablaze on Wednesday in the national capital and doctors said he has suffered 90 per cent burns

The self-immolation occurred at the India Gate lawns where protesters have been demanding the rescinding of the Citizenship Amendment Act

Police, however, said that the act by the youth, identified as Kartik Maher from Odisha, was not connected to the protests

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI) India on Wednesday relaxed certain Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) guidelines for reissue of passport for those below 20 years of age and those above 50 years.

The "temporary relaxation" has been granted till June 30 next year, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) Telecom operators on Thursday suspended internet, voice and messaging services in parts of Delhi-NCR following instructions from the police in the wake of protests against anti-Citizenship Amendment Act.

As per the order, services were suspended for locations including walled city areas of north and central districts, Mandi House, Seelampur, Jaffarbad, Mustafabad, Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh and Bawana.

Telecom service providers including Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio barred the services to comply with the order.

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) A large number of protestors gathered at the Jantar Mantar here on Thursday to protest the amended citizenship law after they were not allowed to demonstrate near the Red Fort and Mandi House where prohibitory orders have been imposed.

Left leaders including D Raja, Sitaram Yechury, Nilotpal Basu, Brinda Karat, Congress' Ajay Maken and Sandeep Dikshit, and activists Yogendra Yadav and Umar Khalid were among those detained near the Red Fort and Mandi House where the two demonstrations were planned to be held.

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) The British Council, UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, said it will remain closed on Thursday due to protests against the new citizenship law in parts of Delhi.

The closure has resulted in the cancelling of the book launch of "Forgotten Master: Indian Painting For the East Indian Company", edited by celebrated author-historian William Dalrymple. The event was to be held at 6:30 pm at the council's premises on KG Marg, near Connaught Place.

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) The Delhi police used a drone to keep a watch on protesters as they gathered to march against the amended citizenship law, from Red Fort in Old Delhi to Shaheed Park near ITO, on Thursday.

The police had denied permission to the left-backed AISA and the Swaraj Abhiyan to hold a march against the Citizenship Amendment Act from Red Fort, citing law and order issues.

NEW DELHI, Dec 19 (NNN-PTI) — Dense fog engulfed the Indian capital and its surrounding areas on Thursday morning (this morning), as departures and arrivals of many flights and trains were delayed, due to poor visibility.

Regular commuters faced difficulty driving on major highways, since visibility was less than 50 metres at many places.

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) A section of Delhi University (DU) students on Tuesday protested against the amended citizenship law and condemned the police crackdown on Jamia Millia Islamia students.

The protest was organised by the Left-backed All India Students' Association and women's collective Pinjra Tod, who claimed that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists targeted "women wearing hijab", a charge denied by the RSS-affiliate.

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) Fresh protests broke out against the amended citizenship law in Seelampur's Brijpuri area on Tuesday night with people pelting stones on police personnel, officials said.

The incident took place at around 8:30 pm, but was brought under control, they said.

Police personnel have been deployed in the area to control any kind of violence, a senior police officer said.

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) The Left-backed All India Students' Association (AISA) on Tuesday condemned the Delhi Police's action of filing an FIR against three Jamia Millia Islamia students in connection with Sunday's violence in the area around the varsity.

The FIR has been filed against seven persons, including former Congress MLA Asif Khan.
