India: Law and order has broken down, PM is 'mute': Cong

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) The Congress on Sunday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over rape incidents in various parts of the country, alleging that rule of law has broken down but the PM is "mute" and has not said a word on it.

Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also tagged a video of Prime Minister Modi attacking the then Congress government over rape incidents in Delhi.

Jodhpur, Dec 7 (PTI) In the backdrop of the Hyderabad rape-murder incident and gunning down of the four accused in an alleged encounter, Chief Justice of India S A Bobde on Saturday said justice can never be instant and loses its character when it becomes revenge.

At the same time, he admitted that the recent events in the country have sparked off an old debate with new vigour, where there is no doubt that the criminal justice system must reconsider its position and attitude towards the time it takes to dispose of a case.

India: Unnao rape/murder accused should be hanged within a month: Maliwal

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Saturday demanded that the accused in the Unnao case be hanged within a month.

"I appeal to the UP government and the Centre to fast track this case and ensure that the perpetrators are hanged within a month," said Maliwal, who begun an indefinite hunger strike on December 3 to press her demand that rapists be hanged within six months of their conviction.

India: Priyanka rushes to Unnao, to meet rape victim's family

Lucknow, Dec 7 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on a visit to the Uttar Pradesh capital, Saturday rushed to Unnao to meet the family of the rape victim who succumbed to severe burns in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.

The Congress general secretary has left for Unnao to meet the family and extend condolences to them, Congress sources said.

India: Unnao rape victim's body being taken to village

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The body of the Unnao rape victim is being taken to her village in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh by road, the family said Saturday.

An ambulance carrying the body left Safdurjung Hospital in Delhi a short while ago.

Earlier today, Ghaziabad Additional District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh had said the administration was ready to airlift or take the body by road to her village.

India: Govt working on more measures to boost economy: FM

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the government is working on more measures to revive the sagging economy.

The GDP growth slowed down to more than six-year low of 4.5 per cent in the second quarter of the current fiscal from 5 per cent recorded in the first quarter.

The government has taken several measures during August and September to boost the economy, she said at the HT Leadership Summit here.

India: UP becoming country's rape capital

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The Congress party on Saturday demanded strict action against the accused in the Unnao case, saying the Uttar Pradesh government has to wake up to realise that the state is becoming the rape capital of the country.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Srimate said responsibility in the Unnao case lies at the "doorstep" of the UP government where law and order has completely collapsed.

"We demand strict action in the matter. The UP government has to wake up to realise that the state is becoming the rape capital of the country," she said.

India: Worrisome that people have lost faith in justice system: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said while the people of the country are rejoicing the encounter deaths of the four accused in the gang rape and murder case of the Hyderabad veterinarian, it is also worrisome that they have lost faith in the justice system.

"The rape cases that have come to light of late, people are in anger whether it is Unnao or Hyderabad, so people are expressing happiness over the encounter.
