The United States’ fumbling response to the pandemic and its dithering over a new aid package is casting doubt on its economic prospects and making it one of the chief risks to a global rebound.

Russia: Nord Stream 2 project to be implemented shortly, says Lavrov

MOSCOW, August 11. /TASS/: There are all reasons to believe that the Nord Stream 2 project will be implemented shortly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday.

"The participants of Nord Stream 2 company, including Russian, German and other participants, are set to finalize the project. As far as I understand there are reasons to believe that it will be done in the near future," he told a joint press conference with his German counterpart Heiko Maas on Tuesday.

Russia: First registered COVID-19 vaccine worldwide is named Sputnik V

MOSCOW, August 11. /TASS/: The world's first registered vaccine against the coronavirus infection which was developed in Russia was named Sputnik V, the official vaccine website launched on Tuesday said.

"In 1957, the successful launch of the first man-made satellite by the Soviet Union activated space research in the entire world. Thanks to this comparison, the vaccine received the name of Sputnik V," the website explains. It is noted that currently over 160 vaccines against the coronavirus are developed worldwide.

Russian vaccine against COVID-19 subject to coordinated information attacks — developer

MOSCOW, August 11. /TASS/: The Russian vaccine against COVID-19 has become subject to coordinated information attacks, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), told an online conference on Tuesday.

"Coordinated and carefully prepared information attacks on the Russian vaccine are trying to discredit and hide the correctness of the Russian approach to drug development," he said.

According to Dmitriev, "a politicized approach to the Russian vaccine on the part of a number of Western countries endangers the lives of their citizens."

Covid-19: EU seeks reinstated curbs due to virus ‘resurgence’

STOCKHOLM, Aug 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The EU’s health agency urged countries seeing an increase in cases of COVID-19 to reinstate some curbs, warning of a resurgence of cases in parts of Europe.

In its latest risk assessment, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said there was evidence that the novel coronavirus was picking up speed.

Developments in east Mediterranean 'extremely worrying', EU says

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union said on Tuesday recent developments in the eastern Mediterranean are “extremely worrying” and warned of escalating tensions between Turkey and Greece, who are at odds over overlapping claims for hydrocarbon resources in the region.

“The latest developments are extremely worrying,” European Commission foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano told a regular news conference.

Belarusian opposition leader flees abroad after bloody clashes

MINSK (Reuters) - Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanouskaya said on Tuesday she had fled abroad for the sake of her children, after two nights of clashes following the contested re-election of strongman President Alexander Lukashenko.

Tikhanouskaya, a 37-year-old former English teacher, emerged from obscurity to mount the biggest challenge in years to Lukashenko, taking her husband’s place in the campaign after he was jailed.

German FM complains about U.S. threat of Nord Stream 2 sanctions

BERLIN, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday that he had complained to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about the threat of sanctions against a German port company due to the Nord Stream 2 project.

Maas said he spoke with Pompeo over phone on Sunday to complain about the decision by three U.S. senators who threatened the German port operator Faehrhafen Sassnitz with sanctions over its support of the Russia-Germany gas pipeline project.
