Celebrity appeal raises €500,000 for Sea-Watch captain

1 July 2019; DW: A crowdfunding effort for detained sea captain Carola Rackete – backed by two of Germany's top television celebrities – raised €500,000 ($569,000) within hours of its launch.

German-born Rackete was arrested on Saturday after ramming her vessel past a police boat  that was blocking its entry to the harbor on the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa.

Eurozone unemployment falls to lowest rate since 2008

1 July 2019; DW: Unemployment in the eurozone dropped to 7.5% in May, the lowest rate recorded since July 2008, the European statistic agency Eurostat reported Monday.

The data showed the number of jobless in the 19 countries using the euro currency stood at 12.3 million, down by 1.2 million people compared to the same period last year.

Russian missile explodes over northern Cyprus

1 July 2019; DW: Northern Cyprus was struck by an object that appears to have been a Russian S-200 missile, Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay said Monday.

"The first assessment is that a Russian-made missile which was part of the air defense system that took place last night in the face of an air strike against Syria, completed its range and fell into our country after it missed," Ozersay wrote on social media.

Cricket: We were not clinical with bat, England bowled superbly: Kohli

Birmingham, Jul 1 (PTI) "England bowled superbly," said India captain Virat Kohli while admitting that they were not clinical with the bat in the 300-plus run chase against England in a World Cup match here.

England outbatted India to register a 31-run win in a high-scoring game and stay alive in the tournament on Sunday.

Chasing an imposing 338 for win, India could only manage 306 for five, and Kohli lamented his side's inability to accelerate on, what according to him, was a flat track.

Russian, US military hold mutual inspections under New START treaty

MOSCOW, July 1. /TASS/: The Russian and US military held inspections under the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) last week, the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper reported on Monday citing data provided by the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russian specialists also held two inspections in Turkey and Romania in accordance with the Vienna Document of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

EU leaders struggle to agree on candidates for top jobs

BRUSSELS (AP) — Marathon talks of European Union leaders dragged into a second day Monday as they sought to narrow a list of candidates for key posts at the helm of the 28-nation bloc amid deep divisions over how to best balance political, geographic and gender considerations.

With the selection process bogged down for the second EU summit meeting in a row, the leaders were still considering Dutch socialist Frans Timmermans to replace Christian Democrat Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the EU’s powerful executive arm, the European Commission.

Putin arrives in Minsk to attend European Games closing ceremony

MINSK, June 30. /TASS/: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the Belarusian capital of Minsk on Sunday to attend the closing ceremony of the Second European Games.

The Russian president was invited to take part in the ceremony on June 25 by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Russia’s upper house speaker urges ban on introduction of sanctions against legislators

GENEVA, June 30. /TASS/: Speaker of the Russian Federation Council (upper house) Valentina Matviyenko has called on parliaments across the word to adopt a ban on slapping sanctions against parliamentarians.

During her speech at the headquarters of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Matviyenko said: "I think we should further unite efforts of all parliaments to ensure the recognition that the introduction of any sanctions against parliamentarians is unacceptable."
