World Bank Group urges Ghana to turn climate challenge into growth opportunity

ACCRA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank Group has urged Ghana to turn its climate challenge into an opportunity for resilient and sustainable growth.

The World Bank made this call Tuesday in its new Country Climate and Development Report for Ghana, warning the income could reduce by up to 40 percent for poor households by 2050 and at least one million more people could fall into poverty if urgent climate actions are not taken in the West African country.

Ghana: AfCFTA launches guided trade initiative for seven countries

ACCRA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) secretariat based in Accra, the capital of Ghana, late Friday launched a guided trade initiative for seven member countries.

These seven countries which have signaled their readiness to start trading under AfCFTA were Tanzania, Mauritania, Kenya, Egypt, Cameroon, Rwanda, and Ghana.

Ghana's ruling party elects new leadership

ACCRA, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's ruling New Patriotic Party on Sunday announced new national officers at the Accra Sports Stadium in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, to lead the party into the 2024 general election.

The new officers elected during the party's annual delegates conference include Stephen Ayensu Ntim as the new national chairman and Justin Frimpong Kodua as the new general secretary.

The new executive will steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.

Ghana: ECOWAS appoints former Beninese president as mediator for Guinea

ACCRA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former Beninese President Thomas Yayi Boni as its new mediator for the transition in Guinea.

Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, president of the ECOWAS Commission, made the announcement at a press briefing on Sunday to conclude the 61st Ordinary Session of the authority of ECOWAS heads of state and government in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

Boni will replace Ghanaian diplomat Mohamed Ibn Chambas, who stepped down as the ECOWAS mediator.

Ghana lifts most COVID-19 restrictions; fully vaccinated travelers exempt from PCR test

ACCRA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the re-opening of land and sea borders and the lifting of most of the COVID-19 restrictions.

In his 28th nationwide COVID-19 address late Sunday, the president said the decision was made after reviewing the raft of measures put in place to help win the fight against the virus, against the background of rapidly declining infections, and the relative success of the vaccination campaign by the Ghana Health Service.

At least 5 killed in highway crash in Ghana

ACCRA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and five others injured in a highway accident in Ghana, police said Monday.

Foster Asante, the Nkawkaw District Police Commander, told the media that the accident occurred on Sunday when a sprinter bus performed a wrongful overtaking near a community along the Accra-Kumasi highway.

"The sprinter bus crashed into a stationary truck and the five persons died instantly," the police commander said.

According to him, five others who were injured were receiving treatment at two hospitals nearby.

Explosion kills 13, flattens village in Ghana mining region

APIATE, Ghana, Jan 21 (Reuters) - At least 13 people were killed and scores injured when a truck carrying explosives to a gold mine in western Ghana detonated, flattening a rural community, the police said on Friday.

Smouldering timber and torn-up sheet metal marked where hundreds of houses had stood in Apiate, a settlement about 200 km (130 miles) west of the capital Accra. Thursday's blast left a crater roughly 20 meters (66 ft) wide. Doors and roofs were blown off other buildings, a Reuters reporter at the scene said.

Huge explosion in Ghana mining region kills residents, fells buildings

ACCRA, Jan 20 (Reuters) - An explosion in Ghana's rural Western Region on Thursday razed hundreds of buildings and killed an unknown number of residents when a truck carrying explosives to a gold mine collided with a motorcycle.

Unverified videos posted on local media showed a large, smouldering blast site in which buildings had been reduced to piles of wood, brick and twisted metal.

Ghana to make COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for targeted groups from January

ACCRA, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Ghana will ramp up its COVID-19 inoculation campaign next month and make the vaccine mandatory for targeted groups including all public sector and health workers from Jan. 22, health service director general Patrick Kuma-Aboagye said on Sunday.

Ghana, like most African nations, has seen a sluggish uptake in COVID-19 vaccinations despite an increase in supplies. Only 1.4 million people out Ghana's population of 30 million are fully vaccinated.

West African bloc sends delegation to Guinea following coup

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — A delegation of West African leaders is to go to Guinea Thursday to meet with the junta that toppled President Alpha Conde in a coup earlier this week.

Top officials of West Africa’s influential economic bloc, ECOWAS, are expected to meet in Conakry, the capital, with the military officers now ruling the country and press them to immediately return the country to constitutional rule.
