WHO says DRC’s Ebola outbreak is still an international emergency

GENEVA, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) –The World Health Organization (WHO) said the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo still constitutes a public health emergency of international concern following the emergence of fresh cases.

The announcement on Tuesday came just a day after the country had been expected to announce that its outbreak – the tenth recorded in its history and by far its largest – was over.

Mixed reception to Italy’s easing of corona lockdown

ROME, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Italy allowed bookshops and children’s clothing retailers to reopen on Tuesday but some business owners chose to stay shut, fearing it was too soon to lift the coronavirus lockdown.

Launderettes and stationery shops were also permitted to reopen on Tuesday as the government sought to gradually lift stringent lockdown measures imposed on March 9.

But not every shop owner rushed to reopen.

Germany’s corona deaths surge past China’s

BERLIN, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The number of deaths in Germany from the Coronavirus has surpassed those reported by China, according to statistics released on Wednesday by local health authorities.

Data analysis firm Risklayer and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, which compiles real-time figures from nearly 400 local authorities, reported 301 new deaths over the past 24 hours, bringing the toll to 3,495.

99-year-old WWII veteran beats coronavirus in Brazil

BRASILIA, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A 99-year-old World War II veteran in Brazil was released from hospital with military honours on Tuesday after recovering from COVID-19.

Second Lieutenant Ermando Piveta, who served in the Brazilian artillery in Africa during World War II, was brought out of the Armed Forces Hospital in Brasilia to a burst of trumpet music and applause.

Wearing an army-green side cap, he raised his arms in the air as he left the hospital after eight days as a patient.

Trump to convene G7 leaders in video call to discuss pandemic

WASHINGTON, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — US President Donald Trump will hold a video teleconference with G7 leaders on Thursday to coordinate national responses to the coronavirus outbreak, the White House said.

Trump, who is head of the G7 this year, had planned to hold this year’s summit at the presidential retreat of Camp David, Maryland, in June, but moved it to a virtual setting due to the virus.

‘Not the time to reduce the resources’ of WHO, says UN chief as US halt funding

UNITED NATIONS, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — It is “not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus,” United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.

“It is my belief that the World Health Organization must be supported, as it is absolutely critical to the world’s efforts to win the war against COVID-19,” he said, after US President Donald Trump announced that his country would cut off funding to the UN health body for mishandling the coronavirus pandemic.

Kuwait urges Egypt, India to repatriate illegal residents to limit coronavirus outbreak

14 April 2020; MEMO: The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday called on the embassies of Egypt and India to repatriate their citizens who were in the country illegally to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The ministry is reported to have asked the Egyptian embassy in Kuwait to urge members of the Egyptian community to abide by quarantine instructions, stressing that they serve the interests of everyone.

India: Doctor tests positive, first COVID-19 case in Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr 13 (PTI) A senior doctor here has tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya, the first coronavirus case in the state, Health Minister A L Hek said on Monday.

The samples of the doctor who owns a private hospital here tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science, the minister said.

The doctor has no recent travel history.
