NAIROBI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Kenya borrowed 504.37 billion shillings (about 3.61 billion U.S. dollars) from external lenders in the financial year 2022/2023, the National Treasury said Friday.

The loans were taken from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and through syndicated facilities and projects, noted the Treasury in a statement released in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

The total disbursements from project loans as of June 12 stood at 1.21 billion dollars, said the institution.

NAIROBI, June 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Eight Kenyan police officers were killed when their vehicle was blown up by an improvised explosive device in a suspected attack by Somalia-based militant group al-Shabaab, police said.

The incident took place on Tuesday in Garissa county in eastern Kenya, a region on the border with Somalia, where al-Shabaab has been waging a bloody insurgency against the fragile government in Mogadishu for more than 15 years.

“We lost eight police officers in this attack,” North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno said.

NAIROBI, May 24 (Reuters) - Chinese hackers targeted Kenya's government in a widespread, years-long series of digital intrusions against key ministries and state institutions, according to three sources, cybersecurity research reports and Reuters' own analysis of technical data related to the hackings.

Two of the sources assessed the hacks to be aimed, at least in part, at gaining information on debt owed to Beijing by the East African nation: Kenya is a strategic link in the Belt and Road Initiative - President Xi Jinping's plan for a global infrastructure network.

NAIROBI, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Saturday hosted a Kungfu tournament in the central Kenyan town of Kiambu located on the outskirts of capital Nairobi.

Ngaruiya Njonge, chairman of Kenya Kungfu Federation, said that 13 clubs and 70 competitors took part in the second edition of the Kenya Kungfu Championship which was sponsored by the Chinese embassy in Kenya.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A court in Kenya on Friday gave police five more days to hold a pastor facing possible terror-related charges in the deaths of more than 100 his congregants, many of whom are believed to have starved to death.

Police rescued 15 emaciated parishioners from the 800-acre Kilifi County property of Paul Mackenzie last month. Four of them died after the group was taken to a hospital, and survivors told investigators the pastor had instructed them to fast to death before the world ends so they could meet Jesus.

Ruto said there is a real danger that the escalation of hostilities in Sudan could degenerate into a security and humanitarian crisis on a devastating scale.
