Sudan-South Sudan dispute will keep UN in Abyei

United Nations, Apr 9 (AP-PTI) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has informed the Security Council that he couldn't provide options to reduce and terminate the nearly 3,700-strong peacekeeping force in the disputed Abyei region on the Sudan-South Sudan border because of differences between the two countries.

The UN chief said in a letter obtained Thursday by The Associated Press that because of the different positions on the future of the force in Abyei, known as UNISFA, no options that would be minimally acceptable to the parties could be formulated.

USA: IMF sees uncertainty around Argentina's economic policies: official

NEW YORK (Reuters) - There is still a lot of uncertainty about Argentina’s economic policy path to make the country’s debt sustainable, an official at the International Monetary Fund said on Thursday.

“There’s always at least two legs to any restructuring. One is how you change the terms of your debt contracts, the other one is how you change your policies to make the new debt sustainable. And I think that second leg is where we have a lot of uncertainty,” said Alejandro Werner, the IMF’s head for the Western Hemisphere, in an event hosted by S&P Global.

Covid-19 lays bare social inequality, warns UN chief

UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (NNN-XINHUA) — The COVID-19 crisis “has revealed how unequal our societies are,” said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message released for the World Health Day.

Highlighting the inequalities and injustices that have been apparent throughout the pandemic, the UN chief said in his message for the day to be marked on Wednesday that the vast majority of vaccine doses administered so far have been confined to “a few wealthy countries” or those producing the shots cleared for distribution.

New York Asian Americans stage "Stop-Asian-Hate" rally

NEW YORK, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Over 10,000 Asian Americans gathered in New York on Sunday for a "Stop-Asian-Hate" rally.

The demonstrators assembled at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan, and marched to City Hall Park and across the Brooklyn Bridge before ending at Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn.

Local officials, victims of hate crimes and people from various ethnic communities participated in the event.

The Asian participants included Chinese Americans and hundreds of people with Nepali, Myanmar or Malaysian origins.

UN Security Council welcomes progress in DRC, concerned over violence

UNITED NATIONS, April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Security Council has welcomed the positive developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and voiced concern over violence in the east and the dire humanitarian situation in the country.

In a press statement, the members of the Security Council welcomed the efforts of President Felix Tshisekedi toward reconciliation and peace and stability in the DRC.

UN chief welcomes revocation of U.S. sanctions against ICC officials

UNITED NATIONS, April 3 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday welcomed the revocation by the United States of former President Donald Trump's executive order on sanctions against senior officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICC plays an important role in advancing accountability for international crimes. The secretary-general affirms the continued cooperation of the United Nations under the Relationship Agreement between the United Nations and the ICC, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, in a statement.

USA: Facebook data on more than 500M accounts found online

NEW YORK (AP) — Details from more than 500 million Facebook users have been found available on a website for hackers.

The information appears to be several years old, but it is another example of the vast amount of information collected by Facebook and other social media sites, and the limits to how secure that information is.

The availability of the data set was first reported by Business Insider. According to that publication, it has information from 106 countries including phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, and email addresses.

Pakistan urges CICA to ‘frontally’ address Kashmir & other disputes between member states

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 03 (APP): Pakistan has called on the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) to play an “active role” in resolving conflicts and disputes, like Jammu and Kashmir, to promote peace and security in the region.

“We must address disputes frontally,” Ambassador Munir Akram told a virtual meeting organized on Friday by the Mission of Kazakhstan on ‘How to build stronger confidence in Asia and make CICA more responsive to the challenges of the 21th Century’.

USA: Fully vaccinated people can travel safely again, CDC says

NEW YORK (AP) — Add travel to the activities vaccinated Americans can safely enjoy again, according to new U.S. guidance issued Friday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance to say fully vaccinated people can travel within the U.S. without getting tested for the coronavirus or going into quarantine afterward.

Still, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky urged caution and said she would “advocate against general travel overall” given the rising number of infections.

“If you are vaccinated, it is lower risk,” she said.

UN officials review plan to build canal on Egypt-Israel border

01 Apr 2021; MEMO: UN officials are reviewing plans to build a new canal along the Egypt-Israel border following the week-long blockage caused by the grounded cargo ship Ever Given, the Guardian has reported.

Hundreds of ships were caught in a bottleneck on the Suez Canal after a Panamanian vessel, the Ever Given, ran aground on Tuesday last week.
