Romania: Concern grows over traffickers targeting Ukrainian refugees

SIRET, Romania (AP) — One man was detained in Poland suspected of raping a 19-year-old refugee he’d lured with offers of shelter after she fled war-torn Ukraine. Another was overheard promising work and a room to a 16-year-old girl before authorities intervened.

Another case inside a refugee camp at Poland’s Medyka border, raised suspicions when a man was offering help only to women and children. When questioned by police, he changed his story.

Russia's Putin shows no sign of engaging in diplomacy -U.S.'s Harris

BUCHAREST, Romania, March 11 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin shows no sign of being willing to engage in diplomacy, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said on Friday during a visit to Romania in the third week of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Harris expressed U.S. support for Romania's efforts to help refugees from Ukraine and restated America's commitment to protecting fellow NATO members during a tour of the alliance's eastern flank countries. She said any attack on or targeting of civilians in Ukraine is a war crime.

Turkish field hospital on Romanian border helping Ukrainian war victims

10 March 2022; MEMO: A Turkish field hospital on the Romanian-Ukrainian border is helping war-weary refugees from Ukraine, Anadolu News Agency reports.

A team from Turkiye's Health Ministry established the hospital at the Siret border crossing in Romania's north-eastern city of Suceava to assist Turkish nationals being evacuated from Ukraine where the war with Russia rages on.

However, its services were expanded to treat Ukrainian refugees who reach the border after nearly two days of travel by bus or train.

Fatalities increase by 2 from 5 in double crash in southeastern Romania

BUCHAREST, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Seven bodies were found in a crashed helicopter in Romania while searching for a fighter jet, bringing the double-crash death toll by two more than previously announced.

The latest figures from the National Defense Ministry show that the helicopter was actually carrying seven servicemen, two more than the usual standard.

The IAR 330 Puma helicopter took off around 20:21, in a search and rescue mission for the MiG 21 Lancer jet.

Romania is ready to host increased NATO troops if needed, president says

BUCHAREST, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Romania is in talks with the United States and France over ways to enhance their troop count in the country and was ready to host an increased NATO military presence, President Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Defense said on Monday it put about 8,500 American troops on heightened alert, awaiting orders to deploy to NATO's eastern flank should Russia invade Ukraine. France has also offered to send more troops if needed. 

Romania: FM invites Romanian investors to avail of emerging trade opportunities

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA Jan 10 (APP): Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi Monday urged the Romanian investors and businessmen to avail of the huge trade and investment opportunities in Pakistan.

Addressing a joint press conference along with his Romanian counterpart Bogdan Aurescu, the foreign minister said a huge potential existed for the Romanian investors in not only promoting the bilateral trade ties, but also from the prospects of Pakistan being a hub of exports to Central Asia as the new markets were now being opened up for the world.

Romania tightens pandemic measures amid COVID-19 surge

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Tighter pandemic measures came into force in Romania on Saturday as authorities hoped to quell sharply rising coronavirus cases amid concerns that the next virus wave could overstretch the country’s health care system.

In mid-December, Romania was reporting fewer than a thousand COVID-19 infections a day, but over the past week, daily cases have surged to around 6,000. It is the highest number of infections since early November when cases were on the decline following a vicious fourth virus wave.

Romania has new gov’t with overwhelming majority in Parliament

BUCHAREST, Nov 26 (NNN-Xinhua) — Romania’s new government led by ex-general Nicolae Ciuca took the oath of office on Thursday soon after winning a vote of confidence in Parliament with overwhelming support.

The official installment of the three-party coalition government put an end to a long political instability in the country after the minority cabinet led by Florin Citu collapsed in a parliamentary no-confidence vote on Oct 5.

Romania hits COVID-19 death record of 591, mostly unvaccinated

BUCHAREST, Nov 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Romania reported a record daily number of 591 COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday amid a persistently low vaccination rate and a wave of coronavirus infections that has overwhelmed the country’s ailing health care system.

Only 37 per cent of adults in Romania, a European Union member with around 19 million people, have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 compared to an EU average of 75 per cent. Within the 27-nation EU, only Bulgaria has a smaller share of its population vaccinated.

Romania's PM-designate seen losing confidence vote, prolonging political crisis

BUCHAREST, Oct 30 (Reuters) - A minority government lineup put forward by Romania's centrist Prime Minister-designate Nicolae Ciuca will face a parliamentary vote of confidence next week, which he is widely expected to lose, further prolonging a month-long political stalemate.

Romania has been in political paralysis since a Liberal-led government was toppled by parliament on Oct. 5, threatening economic recovery and efforts to cut big budget and external shortfalls at a time of rising COVID-19 infections.
