Ethiopian refugees in Sudan need 147 mln USD for basic necessities: UN agency chief

KHARTOUM, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said Sunday that 147 million U.S. dollars is needed to help Ethiopian refugees in Sudan.

More than 43,000 Ethiopians have fled here amid the ongoing conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and an insurgent Northern Tigray regional government since Nov. 4, said the agency on Friday.

The refugees carried "almost nothing" upon their arrivals, Grandi tweeted Sunday after he visited them in Sudan.

Sudan evacuates stranded citizens in Tigray region

27 Nov 2020; MEMO: The Sudanese authorities announced on Thursday the evacuation of stranded citizens in the Ethiopian Tigray region, in light of the violent battles between the federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed in a statement that it: "Continually supervises the conditions of the Sudanese citizens in the Tigray region."

Sudan: Formation of transitional parliament to be postponed

24 Nov 2020; MEMO: The Forces of Freedom and Change Alliance (FFC) announced the postponement of the formation of the transitional parliament to the end of the year.

The agreement signed between the FFC and the military in August 2019 stipulated that the Legislative Council  will be formed within three months. It was to be made up of 300 members, 40 per cent of whom would be women.

Airbridge to convey aid to Ethiopia refugees in Sudan

21 Nov 2020; MEMO: World Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director in Sudan Hameed Nuru reported plans for WFP and US agencies to move humanitarian aid from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Sudan via United Nations (UN) planes, and then to areas hosting Ethiopian refugees by helicopter, Al-Sharq news website reported on Friday.

Sudan closes border with Ethiopia amid Tigray clashes

06 Nov 2020; MEMO: Sudan’s eastern al-Qadarif state closed its border Friday with Ethiopia amid heightened tensions in the Tigray region, according to local media, Anadolu Agency reports.

Clashes are ongoing between the Ethiopian army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the region’s ruling party.

Sudan’s army has deployed reinforcements at the border to stop any potential infiltration of fighters into the country.

Sudan extends transitional government period

04 Nov 2020; MEMO: Sudan’s Sovereign Council and Ministerial Council have approved a constitutional document which includes the extension of the transitional government period for 14 more months, local media reported on Monday.

The original constitutional document placed August 2019 as the start of the transitional period. The change is dated from the signing of the Juba peace deal last month.

Sudan will benefit from Ethiopian dam, says legal expert

03 Nov 2020; MEMO: A Sudanese expert on international law and water policy has said that his country will benefit from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the BBC reported on Sunday. Salman Mohamad called on the government in Khartoum to reach a peaceful solution for the crisis caused by the dam.
