MOSCOW, Sept 12 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin will break the record for the total time they have spent in the International Space Station (ISS), the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos) announced.
According to the space agency, Russian cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov, who has spent 355 days, three hours, 45 minutes, and 21 seconds on the ISS, a feat that he surpassed on Monday, holds the current record.
Prokopyev and Petelin arrived at ISS in September 2022, and their space stay was expected to last until March. Due to a failure of the thermal radiator of the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, their mission will end on Sept 27.
Although both cosmonauts will set a record for a stay on the ISS, Russian cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, who spent a record of 437 days, 17 hours, 58 minutes, and 17 seconds aboard the Mir space station (now dismantled), holds the world record for the longest single stay in space since 1995.
Meanwhile, Astronaut Frank Rubio breaks US record by becoming the first American to spend a full year in space.
Frank Rubio didn’t set out to break a record, but today aboard the International Space Station (ISS), he will do just that.
Rubio, a NASA astronaut and member of the space station’s 69th expedition crew, will become the American who has flown the longest space mission in U.S. history. At 1:39 p.m. EDT (1739 GMT) on Monday (Sept. 11), he will surpass the 355 days, 3 hours and 45 minutes logged by NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei in 2022.
Further, since he is not scheduled to land until Sept. 27, Rubio will soon become the first American, and one of only seven people, to spend a year or more in space, ultimately returning to Earth after 371 days in Earth orbit.
