Russia: Members of February 14 rallies in support of Navalny didn’t break law, Kremlin says

Dmitry Peskov

MOSCOW, February 15. /TASS/: Law enforcement officers did not detain anyone during rallies held on Sunday in support of Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny because no laws were violated, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday.

"We traditionally highly appreciate efficiency of law enforcement officers," the spokesman said when asked how the Kremlin views actions of the police at the Sunday rallies. "As for any measures, they are taken to deal with those who violate laws. Everything was calm yesterday," Peskov stressed.

"As for all these rallies and torches, nobody blocked traffic, nobody gathered generally and there were no direct law breaches," he added. "Yes, some people wandered around with torches, it is great! Maybe some of them are in law, some protested something, some just tagged along without realizing what the torches were for. But the main thing is they did not violate laws."

On Sunday, Navalny supporters came out in the streets of cities across Russia with phone torches and candles to support the recently convicted opposition figure.
