GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — The leaders of Guyana and Venezuela headed for a tense meeting Thursday as regional nations sought to defuse a long-standing territorial dispute that has escalated with Venezuelans voting in a referendum to claim two-thirds of their smaller neighbor.

Pushed by regional partners, Guyanan President Irfaan Ali and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro agreed to meet at the Argyle International airport on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent. The prime ministers of Barbados, Dominica and Trinidad and Tobago said they also would attend.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — The government of Guyana, under pressure from neighboring Brazil and a Caribbean trading bloc, agreed Sunday to join bilateral talks with Venezuela over an escalating territorial dispute.

The century-old dispute between the two South American nations recently reignited with the discovery of masses of oil in Guyana. The government of Nicolas Maduro, through a referendum last week, has claimed sovereignty over the Essequibo territory, which accounts for two-thirds of Guyana and lies near big offshore oil deposits.

GEORGETOWN, Dec 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Five Guyanese soldiers died this week when their helicopter crashed near Venezuela, President Irfaan Ali said as the neighbors faced off in a fast-escalating border dispute.
 
   Writing on Instagram, Ali said Guyana had lost “some of our best men in uniform” when the helicopter went down on Wednesday. An official said earlier that there was nothing to suggest Venezuelan involvement in the crash.

GEORGETOWN, Feb 4 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Guyana National Assembly approved millions in fund to modernize the health sector in 2023, including the intensive training of personnel in view of the deficit in some areas at present.    

The Ministry of Health will recruit and train those interested in the different regions of the country, Minister Frank Anthony told reporters after answering questions from legislators.

7 March 2020; AFP: International observers on Friday called on Guyana President David Granger not to claim victory until election results can be verified, due to "credible" allegations of fraud.

Granger's ruling Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change had a clear lead in partial results published Thursday from the oil-rich South American country's largest region.

But international observers say giving out partial results is illegal and have implored the government to respect the law.
