Migrants on Italian coastguard vessel Gregoretti to disembark following EU deal

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini announced Wednesday afternoon that Italy had reached an agreement with the EU, and that he would allow 131 migrants on board the Italian coastguard vessel Bruno Gregoretti to disembark.

Italy's Etna volcano erupts on Sicily, disrupting flights

21 July 2019; DW: Italy's Mount Etna began spewing hot ash and lava overnight, forcing authorities to close two airports in eastern Sicily. Experts detected "lively spattering" at the volcano last month.

Europe's biggest active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted early Saturday with fiery explosions and lava flows, the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said.

Malta says deal reached with Italy to take migrants from rescue boat

6 July 2019; DW: Malta and Italy reportedly reached a deal on Friday to begin to tackle the standoff between charity rescue ships in the Mediterranean Sea and Italy's far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

The two countries are said to have agreed to each take refugees from a sailboat belonging to Italian NGO Mediterranea that rescued 54 people at sea.

Pope to declare Mariam Thresia as saint on October 13

Kochi, Jul 2 (PTI) Pope Francis will declare Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan, an Indian nun, a saint on October 13, her congregation said here Tuesday.

The Pope has formally approved the canonisation of Mariam Thresia, foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Family, at an ordinary public consistory of cardinals on causes of canonisation at the Vatican on July 1, it said.

He has decreed that the canonisation will take place in St Peters Square on October 13 this year, the congregation said.
