India's daily COVID-19 deaths near record, calls for nationwide lockdown mount

(Reuters) --- India's COVID-19 deaths rose by more than 4,000 for a second consecutive day on Sunday as calls for a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the virus mounted.

India's health ministry reported 4,092 fatalities over the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 242,362. New cases rose by 403,738, just shy of the record and increasing the total since the start of the pandemic to 22.3 million.

New Zealand: First lot of Kiwis arrive home after IPL suspension

Auckland, May 9 (PTI) A group of New Zealand cricketers and coaches, who were involved in the now-suspended IPL, arrived home by a private jet while another lot is expected to land here on Sunday.

Cricketers Trent Boult, Finn Allen, Jimmy Neesham, Adam Milne and Scott Kuggeleijn, coaches and former players James Pamment and Shane Bond, and Royal Challengers Bangalore's director of cricketing operations Mike Hesson landed here late on Saturday night.

India: Oxygenated 100-bed COVID care facility set up at Haj House in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 8 (PTI) An oxygenated 100-bedded COVID care facility has been set up at the Haj House in Srinagar, an official spokesman said on Saturday.

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Srinagar set up the facility in Bemina area of the city in the wake of rising coronavirus cases.

The spokesman said the facility came up at the Haj House in just a week's time.

India: Stalin seeks 500 MT oxygen allocation from Centre for TN

Chennai, May 8 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday requested the Centre to enhance the medical oxygen allocation to Tamil Nadu to 500 metric tonnes.

The chief minister, who had a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assured the PM that Tamil Nadu would stand by the Centre in the fight against Coronavirus.

The Prime Minister assured Stalin that he would consider his request immediately, an official release here said.

India: Corona curfew extended in Uttar Pradesh till May 17

Lucknow, May 9 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday extended till May 17 the curfew imposed in the state to curb the spread of coronavirus, a senior official said.

The curfew, which was earlier scheduled to end on 7 am on Monday, has been extended.

The corona curfew imposed in the state has been extended till May 17, Additional Chief Secretary (Information), Navneet Sehgal, said in a statement issued here.

India: Delhi CM announces extension of lockdown till May 17

New Delhi, May 9 (PTI) The ongoing lockdown in Delhi will be extended for another week up to May 17 morning and Metro train services will be halted during the period, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday.

He said although COVID-19 cases have come down in the last few days, but any slackness would squander the gains achieved so far in the current wave of the pandemic.

India: Corona curfew in J-K extended till May 17

Jammu, May 9 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir Administration on Sunday extended till May 17 the curfew imposed across the union territory to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The curfew was earlier scheduled to end on Monday.

The curfew will be strict except for a few essential services, the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) said.

Long-haul carrier Emirates to ship aid for free into India

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dubai’s long-haul carrier Emirates will begin shipping aid for free into India to help fight a crushing outbreak of the coronavirus, the airline said Sunday.

The offer by Emirates, which has some 95 flights weekly to nine cities, comes as air freight costs have skyrocketed. That’s as air cargo demand has risen to its highest recorded level ever amid the pandemic, which has seen carriers including Emirates fly cargo in otherwise-empty passenger seats.

Tunisia announces one-week lockdown including Eid

08 May 2021; MEMO: Tunisian Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi on Friday announced a seven-day comprehensive quarantine, including Eid Al-Fitr, and closing places of worship.

Mechichi announced in a press conference that the government had approved a general lockdown in the country from 9-16 May, including Eid Al-Fitr, to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The Tunisian PM called on citizens to abide by the decision and not to exchange visits during the religious holiday.
