KHARTOUM, Oct 28 (Reuters) - The Sudanese army faces widening opposition to this week's coup with the U.N. Security Council on Thursday urging the restoration of the civilian-led transitional government and activists in Sudan mobilising for protests this weekend.

The takeover, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Monday against a civilian government, has brought thousands of people on to the streets to reject a return of military rule and demand a transition towards civilian rule be put back on track.

28 Oct 2021; MEMO: The African Union on Wednesday suspended Sudan from all its activities, Anadolu News Agency reports.

The decision will remain in effect until the reinstatement of the Sudan Transitional Government formed over two years ago after the ouster of former President Omar Al-Bashir.

In a statement, the African Political, Peace and Security Council (PAPS) urged the reinstatement of the transitional government that brought together both the military and civilian officials.

KHARTOUM, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The World Bank halted disbursements for operations in Sudan on Wednesday in response to the military's seizure of power from a transitional government, while state oil company workers, doctors and pilots joined civilian groups opposing the takeover.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets since Monday's coup led by armed forces chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and several have been killed in clashes with security forces.

27 Oct 2021; MEMO: Workers at Sudan's state petroleum company Sudapet said today they would join a nationwide civil disobedience movement called by trade unions in response to the military's overthrow of the government, and doctors also announced a strike, Reuters reports.

A group of neighbourhood committees in Khartoum have announced a schedule of further street barricades and protests leading to what it said would be a "march of millions" on Saturday.

KHARTOUM, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Sudan's civil aviation authority on Tuesday suspended all flights to and from Khartoum international airport until Saturday, the airport said.

The head of the civil aviation authority told Reuters that the suspension was due to the current events in the country.

Ibrahim Adlan said Sudanese airspace remains open to passing flights.

Protesters took to the streets on Tuesday after deadly clashes the previous day to demonstrate against the military takeover.

KHARTOUM, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- International organizations and regional alliances have voiced their concerns over Sudan's situation and called for political dialogue after the country's transitional government was dissolved and Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was arrested by the military on Monday.

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday condemned the military actions in Sudan and demanded an immediate release of Hamdok and other detained officials.

26 Oct 2021; MEMO: A senior Sudanese diplomat said yesterday that the military coup in his country is not expected to dramatically affect the normalisation process with Israel, Israeli media reported.

Speaking to Israeli public broadcaster Kan, the diplomat said that the many of the military leaders support the normalisation of ties with Israel.

He also said that the takeover has strengthened the position of the military as the government was dissolved and a state of emergency was declared in the country.

25 Oct 2021; MEMO: Soldiers arrested most of the members of Sudan's cabinet today and a military officer dissolved the transitional government, while opponents of the takeover took to the streets where gunfire and injuries were reported, Reuters said.

Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, a military officer who headed the Sovereign Council, a power-sharing ruling body, announced a state of emergency across the country and dissolved the council and the transitional government.

KHARTOUM, Oct 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Opponents of Sudan’s transition to democracy took to the streets of Khartoum to call on the army to take control of the country.

Several thousand demonstrators gathered outside the presidential palace as the country’s political crisis deepens.

Military and civilian groups have been sharing power since the toppling of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

However, tensions have grown since a coup attempt attributed to followers of Bashir was foiled in September.

16 Oct 2021; MEMO: Thousands of Sudanese demonstrated in front of the presidential palace in Khartoum on Saturday to demand the "restoration of the revolution" and better living conditions, Anadolu Agency reports.

Waving the national flag, demonstrators carried banners reading "Patient people are hungry" and "One people, one army" among others, according to an Anadolu Agency reporter at the scene.

They were also chanting slogans calling for the overthrow of the transitional government.
