USA: Giuliani probe awaits Garland as he nears AG confirmation

NEW YORK (AP) — With Merrick Garland poised to be confirmed as attorney general as early as next week, one of the first major questions he is likely to encounter is what to do about Rudy Giuliani.

A federal probe into the overseas and business dealings of the former New York City mayor and close ally of former President Donald Trump stalled last year over a dispute over investigative tactics as Trump unsuccessfully sought reelection and amid Giuliani’s prominent role in subsequently disputing the results of the contest on Trump’s behalf.

Over 930 million tons of food thrown away in waste bins every year: UN global report

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 05 (APP): The Food Waste Index Report 2021, conducted by U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with WRAP, a British nonprofit that works to reduce global waste, found that 931 million metric tons (1.03 billion tons) of food were wasted by households, retailers and restaurants throughout the year.

Approximately 17% of food produced and sold around the globe in 2019 ended up in waste bins, according to a new United Nations report.

US, at UN, accuses Russia of blocking ‘accountability’ on Syria chem weapons

UNITED NATIONS, March 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The new US envoy to the United Nations accused Russia of seeking to stymie efforts to hold the government of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad accountable for its use of chemical weapons during its long civil war.

“We all know the Assad regime has repeatedly used chemical weapons. So why hasn’t the Syrian government been held accountable?” the ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told a Security Council meeting via videoconference.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday rejected calls for his resignation in the face of sexual harassment allegations that have threatened his hold on power and damaged his national political standing.

The Democrat, speaking somberly in his first public appearance since three women accused him of inappropriate touching and offensive remarks, apologized and said that he “learned an important lesson” about his behavior around women.

US demands status of all Syrian detainees be made public

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States demanded Tuesday that the status of tens of thousands of civilians detained in Syria during the country’s 10-year conflict be made public, and that the bodies of those who died be returned to their loved ones.

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield made the demand at an informal high-level U.N. General Assembly meeting on human rights in Syria where she denounced the “brutality” and “untold suffering” caused by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime and the “appalling atrocities” it has committed.

USA: Cuomo avoids public amid outcry over harassment allegations

The governor hasn’t taken questions from reporters since a Feb. 19 briefing, an unusually long gap for a Democrat whose daily, televised updates on the coronavirus pandemic were must-see TV last spring.

China-Pakistan ties force for regional, world peace: Amb. Munir Akram

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 02 (APP): Commemorating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Pakistan and China, Ambassador Munir Akram has said that the relationship was a force for peace and stability in the region and beyond.

“This relationship has withstood the vicissitudes of time and enjoys the full support of our peoples at all levels,” the Pakistani envoy to the UN said in a message to the community members.

“It (relationship) is marked by warmth, mutual respect and win-win cooperation,” Ambassador Akram said.
