US politicians call for impeachment of Trump after his supporters storm Capitol Hill

NEW YORK, Jan 07 (APP): American politicians and lawyers called for President Donald Trump to be impeached again, after security personnel regained control of Capitol Hill in Washington from thousands of Trump supporters who invaded the complex where Congress meets in an attempt to overturn the results of the Nov. 3 election won by Joe Biden.

The violent attack also evoked a sense of shock from world leaders, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who said he was “saddened” by Wednesday’s events.

US-based body says it expects President-elect Biden to back oppressed Kashmiris’ cause

NEW YORK, Jan 05 (APP): A prominent Kashmiri advocacy organization has strongly condemned India’s occupation of Kashmir, and hoped that the incoming Biden administration would champion the Kashmiri people’s cause for the exercise of their United Nations-pledged right of self-determination.

“Seventy three years of oppression and terror have not weakened the Kashmiri peoples’ commitment to self-determination,” the World Kashmir Awareness Forum, which is based in Washington, said in a statement marking Kashmiris’ Right to Self-determination Day being observed on Tuesday.

Covid-19: Most US vaccines go idle as New York, Florida move to penalise hospitals

NEW YORK, Jan 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — More than two-thirds of the 15 million coronavirus vaccines shipped within the United States have so far gone unused, US health officials said, as the governors of New York and Florida vowed to penalise hospitals that fail to dispense shots quickly enough.

In New York, hospitals must administer vaccines within a week of receiving them or face a fine and a reduction in future supplies, Governor Andrew Cuomo said, hours before announcing the state’s first known case of a new, more infectious coronavirus variant originally detected in Britain.

UN: 5 countries assume responsibilities as elected members of Security Council

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway on Monday began to assume responsibilities as non-permanent members of the Security Council.

Their two-year term officially started on Jan. 1. But Monday is the first working day of the council for 2021 after the Christmas and New Year break.

A flag installation ceremony was held at noon to mark the start of their responsibilities.

At least four U.S. states identify cases of new coronavirus strain

NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. state of New York on Monday confirmed its first case of a new coronavirus variant that was first identified in Britain and appears to be more contagious, making it the fourth state to report the strain.

"An individual from Saratoga County, New York, tested positive for the strain. The individual had no known travel history," said Governor Andrew Cuomo in his tweet.

USA: NYSE withdraws plans to delist 3 Chinese phone carriers

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Stock Exchange says it is withdrawing plans to remove shares of three Chinese state-owned phone carriers under an order by President Donald Trump.

The exchange cited “further consultation” with U.S. regulators but gave no other details of its decision in a notice issued late Monday.

The NYSE earlier announced plans to remove China Telecom Corp. Ltd., China Mobile Ltd. and China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd. after Trump’s order in November barring Americans from investing in securities issued by companies deemed to be linked to the Chinese military.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 04 (APP): Pakistan has reacted to some tall claims made by India about its role in international affairs in a video released Sunday timed with New Delhi’s assumption of a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, saying it stands in violations of the 15-member body’s resolutions and UN Charter principles.

“It’s true colours will be revealed during its 2-year tenure on the Security Council,” Ambassador Munir Akram said of India, when asked by APP to comment on its assertion that India was a voice of reason and votary of international law.

US Congress passes bill to expand number of scholarships to Pakistani women

NEW YORK, Jan 04 (APP): The US Congress has passed a bill named after Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai that expands the number of scholarships to women in Pakistan under a merit and needs-based programme, according to information posted on the congressional website.

The ‘Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act’ was passed by the House of Representatives in March 2020, and the US Senate adopted it by a voice vote on January 1, 2021.

It has now been sent to the White House for US President Donald Trump to sign it into law.

US rejects UN budget over Israel, Iran issues

02 Jan 2021; MEMO: The administration of outgoing US President Donald Trump voted against the United Nations (UN) budget over issues related to Israel and Iran, AFP reported.

Only Israel followed in the footsteps of the US regarding the vote, while 167 countries voted in favour of the General Assembly's approval of the $3.231 billion UN budget for 2021.
