UNITED NATIONS, Sep 01 (APP): A top Pakistani diplomat has called on the UN Security Council to shift some of its focus on combating Al-Qaeda and ISIS/Da’esh to Hindutva extremists in India terrorizing Muslims, as he stressed the need for the 15-member body to reform its counter-terrorism work.

“Terrorism has proliferated across the world,” Ambassador Munir Akram told a virtual meeting of the General Assembly which discussed the annual report of the Security Council on its actions to maintain international peace and security.

Chinese govt complicates TikTok sale ordered by US govt

NEW YORK (AP) — The Chinese government is complicating the U.S.-government-ordered sale of U.S. TikTok assets.

China on Friday introduced export restrictions on artificial intelligence technology, seemingly including the type that TikTok uses to choose which videos to spool up to its users. That means TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, would have to obtain a license to export any restricted technologies to a foreign company.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 30 (APP): The United Nations on Sunday called for stepped up efforts to eliminate enforced disappearances, saying this “atrocious crime” has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the whole of society.

“The crime of enforced disappearance is rife across the world”, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his message commemorating the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearance. “We see new cases almost daily, including the disappearance of defenders of the environment, who are often indigenous peoples”.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Head of the UN Alliance of Civilizations Miguel Moratinos on Saturday condemned the burning of the Quran by far-right extremists in the Swedish city of Malmo.

Moratinos described the incident on Friday, which triggered riots in Malmo, as "despicable and totally unacceptable nor justifiable," said his spokesperson, Nihal Saad, in a statement.

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Global COVID-19 deaths surpassed 840,000 on Saturday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

With total COVID-19 cases around the world reaching 24,892,543, the death toll worldwide rose to 840,341 as of 6:28 p.m. (2228 GMT), the CSSE data showed.
