Quad officials meet in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) Senior officials of the Quad grouping comprising India, Japan, the US and Australia held deliberations here for two days, their first meeting since the standoff over Taiwan.

Vani Rao, Joint Secretary (Americas) in the Ministry of External Affairs, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu, Deputy Minister for Foreign Policy of Japan Keiichi Ichikawa, and Australia's Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Justin Hayhurst took part in the meeting.

India: IIT-Kanpur brilliant student commits suicide

Kanpur: A PhD student in IIT-Kanpur ends his precious life by suicide on campus, police said here on Wednesday.

The incident had reportedly taken place on Tuesday night. That was known only after a student informed the security personnel that Prashant Singh's room was closed from the inside.

Most importantly, he was not responding to knocks, he also made it clear.

The institute's administrators forcibly opened the door and found Prasant Singh hanging from the ceiling with the help of a bedsheet.

India, Bangladesh sign 7 pacts during PM Sheikh Hasina's visit

NEW DELHI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- India and Bangladesh on Tuesday signed seven agreements on various fields, including water resources, railways, space technology, judiciary, scientific and technological cooperation, and TV broadcasting.

The agreements were inked in New Delhi in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his visiting Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina, who is here on a four-day state visit.

The two PMs also jointly inaugurated various projects, including a power plant, a railway bridge and several railway line projects.

Bangladesh PM Hasina begins 4-day visit to India

New Delhi, Sep 5 (PTI) Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived here on Monday on a four-day trip to expand overall ties between the two countries.

Hasina will hold wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday following which the two sides are likely to unveil a raft of measures to boost cooperation in areas of defence, trade and river-water sharing.

The Bangladesh PM was received at the airport by Union minister Darshana Jardosh.

India: Soren govt wins confidence vote amid walkout by BJP MLAs

Ranchi, Sept 5 (PTI) The Jharkhand Assembly on Monday passed the confidence motion tabled by Chief Minister Hemant Soren amid a walkout staged by BJP legislators.

As many as 48 MLAs voted in favour of the confidence motion in the 81-member Assembly.

Speaking during the one-day special session, Soren said the need for trust vote was felt as BJP was "attempting to destabilise democratically elected governments" in non-BJP ruled states, including Jharkhand.

India: Murugha Math seer sent to judicial custody

Chitradurga (K'taka), Sep 5 (PTI) A local court here on Monday ordered the chief pontiff of Murugha Math Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, who is facing charges of sexual abuse of minor girls, to be sent to judicial custody till September 14.

The judicial custody is for a period of nine days.

The police did not seek extension of the police custody in which he was held since September 2.

Following this, the Second Additional District and Sessions Court sent him to judicial custody.

India: Centre's efforts directed at 'reset' of Oppn govts instead of reset of economy: Cong

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) The Congress on Friday alleged that India's growth story is being pushed back due to the Centre's "inept" handling of the economy and said its efforts are only directed towards "reset" of governments led by Opposition parties instead of chalking out a roadmap for the "reset of the economy".

The Opposition party also asked whether the government will now go back on its promises of doubling farmers' income by 2022 and making the country a USD 5 trillion economy.

Lightning strikes kill 17 in India's Bihar state

NEW DELHI, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 people were killed due to lightning in India's eastern state of Bihar, the state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) said Saturday.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning strikes lashed the state during the past 24 hours, affecting six districts.

Officials said most of the victims were farmers working in the fields when the lightning struck.

India’s Daily COVID-19 Caseload Decreased To 6,168

NEW DELHI, Sept 2 (NNN-PTI) – India’s daily COVID-19 caseload, today decreased to 6,168, officials said.

According to federal health ministry data, released this morning, the new cases were reported during the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 44,442,507 in the country.

The cases reported today marked a fall from the daily caseload of 7,946 yesterday.

With the fresh cases, India’s active caseload currently stands at 59,210.
