India: Dark days of Emergency can never be forgotten: PM Modi

New Delhi, Jun 25 (PTI) On the 46th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said those "dark days" can never be forgotten and called for taking a pledge to strengthen India's democratic spirit and live up to the values enshrined in the Constitution.

"This is how Congress trampled over our democratic ethos. We remember all those greats who resisted the Emergency and protected Indian democracy," he tweeted, while sharing a link about several draconian measures taken by the then Congress government.

India: HC refuses to stay CCI notice to Facebook, WhatsApp in privacy policy

New Delhi, Jun 23 (PTI) The Delhi High Court has refused to stay the Competition Commission of India (CCI) notice asking Facebook and WhatsApp to furnish certain information in relation to a probe ordered by it into the instant messaging app's new privacy policy.

India: Govt expert panel accepts Covaxin phase-3 trial data with 77.8% efficacy

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) An expert panel of the country's central drugs authority has reviewed and accepted the phase-3 trial data of Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin, sources said on Tuesday.

According to the data submitted by the Hyderabad-based firm, the indigenously developed vaccine has shown 77.8 per cent efficacy in the trial conducted on 25,800 subjects, they said.

India: Cong leader Kamal Nath meets Sharad Pawar

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath met NCP supremo Sharad Pawar here Tuesday evening.

The two leaders spent around half an hour at Pawar's residence.

The meeting set off muted speculations in political circles as it came on a day Pawar met leaders of various political parties in what is seen as an attempt to cobble up a non-congress third front.

India: IndiGo airlines offers discount for vaccinated passengers

New Delhi, Jun 23 (PTI) IndiGo will give 10 per cent discount from Wednesday onwards to all passengers who have taken at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, a statement said.

The discount would be given on base fare and only "limited inventory" is available under this offer, the airline's statement noted.

"The offer is only available to vaccinated passengers aged 18 years and above, who are located in India at the time of booking and have already received a (at least one dose of) COVID-19 vaccine in the country," it said.

India: Two Army personnel held for rape at crematorium ground

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) Two women were allegedly raped by two army personnel at a crematorium ground in Delhi's Cantonment area, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Saturday and the accused -- Sandeep and Neeraj -- were arrested from the area, police said.

The matter is being investigated and the statement of the women will be recorded under Criminal Procedure Code Section 164, they said. A case has been registered based on the women's statement, police said.

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) Leaders of several opposition parties including TMC, SP, AAP, RLD and the Left parties assembled at NCP chief Sharad Pawar's residence here on Tuesday to hold a meeting, amid the heightened speculation about the possibility of a third front against the ruling BJP.

India: Sharad Pawar working to unite Opposition

Mumbai, Jun 21 (PTI) NCP chief Sharad Pawar is working to unite all opposition leaders, party spokesperson Nawab Malik said while commenting on a meeting between Pawar and political strategist Prashant Kishor in New Delhi, their second one-on-one interaction this month, on Monday on the eve of the NCP's national executive meet.

Malik also said Pawar will host political leaders and eminent persons from different sections of society at his residence in New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the "current scenario in the country".

India: Rahul Gandhi releases white paper on Covid management

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday released a "white paper" by the party on the Centre's Covid management and urged the government to prepare for the third wave of coronavirus.

Releasing the "white paper", the former Congress chief said it is clear that the management of the first and second wave of COVID-19 was "disastrous".

India: SC reserves verdict on Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia compensation to kin of COVID-19 deceased

New Delhi, Jun 21 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday reserved verdict on the pleas seeking directions that ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh be paid to the families of those who have died of COVID-19.

A special vacation bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and M R Shah heard Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and senior advocate S B Upadhyay and other lawyers for almost two hours.
