China may postpone annual congress because of virus

BEIJING (AP) — China said Monday it may postpone its annual congress in March, its biggest political meeting of the year, as the military dispatched hundreds more medical workers and extra supplies to the city hit hardest by a 2-month-old virus outbreak.

Japanese officials, meanwhile, confirmed 99 more people were infected by the new virus aboard the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess, bringing the total to 454.

Singapore economy grew 0.7 percent in 2019

SINGAPORE, Feb 17 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Singapore’s economy grew by 0.7 per cent in 2019, slower  than the 3.4 per cent growth recorded in 2018, according to the republic’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).

For 2020, MTI said, it has downgraded the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast to -0.5 to 1.5 per cent, with growth expected to come in at around 0.5 per cent, the mid-point of the forecast range. 

Pakistani volunteers to join anti-virus fight in Shanghai, China

BEIJING Feb. 16 (APP): Muhammad Mansoor Alam Khan, a 26-year-old from Pakistan, started distributing masks and manuals on the epidemic prevention to locals as a volunteer in Shanghai to control coronavirus outbreak.

Putting on a mask, a pair of goggles and a protective suit, Khan began distributing masks and manuals on the epidemic prevention to locals, before heading to a highway checkpoint to help inspect vehicles entering Shanghai, local media reported.

Coronavirus cases on board of cruise ship in Japan increased to 355 - authorities

TOKYO, February 16. /TASS/: Confirmed 2019-nCOV coronavirus infections on board of the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Yokohama increased to 355, Health Minister of Japan Katsunobu Kato said on Sunday on the air with the NHK TV Channel.

"We tested over 1,200 individuals by now. Among them, we confirmed 355 coronavirus infection cases.

70 more infection cases were therefore found on board of the ship over the last day.

New virus has infected more than 67,000 people globally

CHINA (AP) --- A viral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 67,000 people globally. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

The latest figures reported by each government’s health authority as of Saturday in Beijing:

— Mainland China: 1,523 deaths among 66,492 cases, mostly in the central province of Hubei.

— Hong Kong: 56 cases, 1 death

— Macao: 10

— Japan: 262, including 218 from a cruise ship docked in Yokohama, 1 death

No handshakes: Viral outbreak spooks Asian places of worship

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — In a popular Catholic church in the Philippines, nearly half of the pews were empty for Sunday Mass. The few hundred worshippers who showed up were asked to refrain from shaking others’ hands or holding them during prayers to prevent the spread of the virus that started in China.

In Hong Kong, Cardinal John Hon Tong, wearing a mask, announced the suspension of public Masses for two weeks and urged churchgoers to instead watch them online.

China reports major drop in new virus cases; 143 new deaths

BEIJING (AP) — China reported 2,641 new virus cases Saturday as it escalates measures to contain the outbreak and reassure an anxious public.

The figure is a major drop from the higher numbers in recent days since a broader diagnostic method was implemented. The number of new deaths rose slightly to 143, bringing the total fatalities in mainland China to 1,523. The number of confirmed cases in the country now stands at 66,492, according to China’s National Health Commission.

Philippines lifts ban on sending labour to Kuwait

14 Feb 2020; MEMO: The Philippines yesterday announced a “total lift” to a ban on sending local household workers to Kuwait.

Philippine labour minister, Silvestre Bello III, told Kuwait’s Al-Qabas that the ban was “lifted permanently,” adding that the decision was made in coordination with the country’s “foreign ministry and the Department of Labour and Employment.”
