HANOI, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Police of Vietnam's central Ha Tinh province have filed charges against criminal activities of organizing, brokering illegal immigration and residence in foreign countries following reports of local families seeking for their missing relatives in Britain.

Asian markets follow Wall Street higher after Fed rate cut

BEIJING (AP) — Most Asian stock markets followed Wall Street higher on Thursday after the Federal Reserve cut a key interest rate.

Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul advanced. Shanghai retreated 0.1% after Chinese factory activity weakened more than expected in October.

Investors welcomed the Fed’s third rate cut this year to shore up economic growth amid a bruising U.S.-China trade war. The Fed indicated it won’t cut rates again unless the outlook worsens.

Fire burns down structures at historic Japanese castle

TOKYO (AP) — A fire early Thursday burned down structures at Shuri Castle on Japan’s southern island of Okinawa, nearly destroying the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Firefighters were still battling the blaze a few hours after the fire started early Thursday and nearby residents were evacuated to safer areas, Okinawa police spokesman Ryo Kochi said.

China 'supports' barring of Joshua Wong from Hong Kong election

Beijing, Oct 30 (AFP/PTI) Beijing expressed "approval and support" Wednesday for the disqualification of Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong from upcoming local elections, after months of protests in the semi-autonomous city.

Wong, one of the most prominent figures in the otherwise leaderless movement, accused the Hong Kong government of "political screening" after an election officer ruled his nomination for the November poll invalid on Tuesday.

French president and other foreign leaders to attend 2nd CIIE

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, leaders of four countries will attend the opening ceremony and related events of the second China International Import Expo (CIIE) which runs from Nov. 5 to 10 in Shanghai, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced Wednesday.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying said the leaders include French President Emmanuel Macron, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.

US to send security envoy, commerce secretary to ASEAN meet

BANGKOK (AP) — The White House has announced that a national security adviser and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will attend two summits in Thailand.

The announcement comes just days before the Associated of Southeast Asian Nations summit and East Asia summit near Thailand’s capital, where security is being ramped up.

The White House announcement said Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Robert C. O’Brien would lead the delegation.

Chinese firm completes 40 projects worth $6 bln in Pakistan

BEIJING, Oct 29 (APP): The PowerChina, a state-owned company, has so far completed around 40 various projects at a cost of $ 6 billion in different parts of Pakistan.

Russia resumes wheat export to Vietnam’s market

HANOI, October 29. /TASS/: Russia has resumed wheat supplies to Vietnam, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov, who chairs a bilateral intergovernmental commission for trade and economic, scientific and technical cooperation, said on Tuesday.

"We have ironed out the issue on supplies [of wheat]. <...> We had some issues related to weed seeds found in the grain. We have solved this issue and settled this with the Vietnamese side, and Russia’s grain has already entered the Vietnamese market," Akimov said.

Security measures beefed up for ASEAN Summit in Bangkok and vicinity

Strong quake jolts southern Philippines, 1 dead, dozens hurt

DAVAO, Philippines (AP) — A powerful earthquake shook the southern Philippines on Tuesday, killing one person, injuring dozens and sending people dashing out of homes and buildings in a region still recovering from recent strong quakes.

The 6.6 magnitude earthquake was caused by movement in a local fault about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) deep about 25 kilometers northeast of Tulunan town in Cotabato province, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology said. The U.S. Geological Survey had the same measurement, adjusted from a preliminary 6.8.
