Syrian top diplomat thanks Russia for assistance in fight against terrorism

BEIJING, June 18. /TASS/: The Syrian authorities are grateful to Russia and Iran for their assistance in the fight against terrorism and expect foreign troops, primarily those from the the US and Turkey, to leave the country, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said at joint press conference with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Tuesday.

Japan will not send military to Gulf of Oman after attack on tankers — defense minister

TOKYO, June 18. /TASS/: Japan will not send military forces to the Gulf of Oman after last week's attack on the two tankers there, Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya said on Tuesday.

"It is not clear who is behind the attack, and there were no Japanese citizens onboard [the tankers]. Attacks did not continue, and there is no need to send Japan's Defense Forces there," Iwaya said.

He added that Tokyo closely follows the developments in the region after an escalation in the relations between the United States and Iran.

Rescue efforts underway after China quake kills at least 12

BEIJING (AP) — Rescue efforts are underway after an earthquake in southwestern China that has left 12 people dead and 134 others injured.

The Yibin city press office said on its social media account that 73 houses had collapsed.

The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management said hundreds of firefighters arrived early Tuesday and had rescued eight trapped people.

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake and a 5.1 magnitude aftershock struck the area in Sichuan province late Monday night. Aftershocks continued into Tuesday morning.

Asian markets mostly edge higher ahead of Fed meeting

SINGAPORE (AP) — Stocks in Asia mostly advanced Tuesday ahead of interest rate decisions by the U.S. Federal Reserve and other central banks.

The Kospi in South Korea gained 0.5% to 2,101.43, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng picked up 0.9% to 27,471.19. The Shanghai Composite index jumped 0.2% to 2,892.53, while Australia’s S&P ASX 200 added 0.4% to 6,559.50. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 lost 0.3% to 21,067.95. Shares rose in Taiwan and Singapore but fell in the Philippines.

Hong Kong protests fade as activists mull next steps

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s government headquarters has reopened as the number of protesters gathered outside dwindled to a few dozen.

The demonstrations persisted into early Tuesday but by midmorning most of the protesters had gone home.

A routine meeting of the Executive Council was called off. Chief Executive Carrie Lam suspended work on the extradition bill that ignited the protests but still faces calls to resign for having sought to push through the legislation, which would allow some suspects to be tried in mainland Chinese courts.

202 projects signed to help lift Tibet out of poverty

LHASA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- A total of 202 projects aimed at helping lift southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region out of poverty were signed Monday at a poverty alleviation meeting.

The projects, with an estimated investment of 21.5 billion yuan (about 3.1 billion U.S. dollars), cover a wide range of fields, including education, healthcare, relocation and employment and science and technology.

Since 2017, 25 such projects have been implemented, according to the local poverty alleviation authorities.

2 killed, 10 missing as passenger boat sinks in Indonesia

JAKARTA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Two people were confirmed dead and 10 others went missing as a passenger boat capsized in waters off East Java province of western Indonesia on Monday, an official said.

The boat heading to Kalianget sub-district went down in waters off Sumenep after departing from Raas Island of Raas sub-district, both of the sub-districts are situated in Sumenep district, head of the operational section of the provincial search and rescue office Al-Amrat told Xinhua via phone.

2022 Hangzhou Asian Games submission of mascot proposals to continue till July 15

BEIJING, June 17 (APP): The organizing committee for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and Asian Para Games will continue to accept submission of proposals for the design of official mascot till July 15.

The organizing committee for the games launched a campaign to solicit ideas for official mascots starting from April 16, running for three months until July 15.

The result will be announced by the end of 2019, Secretary of Hangzhou Municipal Committee Zhou Jiangyoung said on Monday.

Protesters demand embattled Hong Kong leader resign

HONG KONG (AP) — Demonstrators in Hong Kong gathered Monday outside the office of the city’s leader, demanding that she step down for the crisis over a highly unpopular extradition bill that has tested the durability of China’s promises to respect the former British colony’s quasi-autonomy.

The mostly young protesters blocked a street near the city’s waterfront as they stood outside the office of Chief Executive Carrie Lam chanting calls for her to cancel the proposed legislation.

Global shares mixed as investors look ahead to Fed rates

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares were mixed Monday amid a wait-and-see attitude about the direction of interest rates and the trade dispute between the U.S. and China.

France’s CAC 40 added nearly 0.2% in early trading to 5,376.03. Germany’s DAX fell less than 0.1% to 12,089.45. Britain’s FTSE 100 rose nearly 0.2% to 7,356.56.

U.S. shares were set to drift higher with Dow futures up 0.1% to 26,162. S&P 500 futures were also up 0.1% at 2,898.50.
