India: First landline connection began in city on Aug 27, 1947

Kanpur: Today is World Communication Day and we have now been experiencing the famous line of Duniya mutthi mein. Let us know about the first landline connection released in the name of the Nagar Nigam's chief health officer Radha Raman Srivastava in the district on August 27, 1947.

First, four-digit number was given then 6 and 2 added with this in later days. Further it became seven-digit number. What is the most surprising point was that only a sum of Rs 34 was spent in securing landline  phone connection from the the Post & Telegraph department. In those olden days having a landline phone link used to be a matter of status symbol.

When the STD calls were booked from a house with the phone facility, the neighbors had to wait for the link for long.

Later the postal deptt and telegraph deptt were divided into two separate departments. In the year 2000 the BSNL came into existence thereby bringing boom in mobile communication.
