UN appoints US diplomat to lead new mission in Haiti

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 15 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed US diplomat Helen Meagher La Lime as special representative for Haiti and head of the United Nations Integrated Office there.

The appointment comes on the eve of the Security Council’s consideration of the status of the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH).

This session in the 15-member body comes before the transition of the MINUJUSTH to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), a special political mission for which La Lime will be responsible.

According to a statement from the secretary general’s office, since 2018 La Lime has served as head of the MINUJUSTH.

Before joining the UN team, she served as UN ambassador to Angola (2014-2017) and director of Outreach of the United States Africa Command in Germany (2011-2013).

From 1996 to 2011, she served in various field positions with the US Department of State in countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Morocco, and Chad.

La Lime holds a master’s degree from the National Defense University in Washington, and a bachelor’s degree in Languages and Linguistics from Georgetown University, Washington.
