India: Kanpur Madarsa teachers crave for honorarium

Kanpur: The Madarsa teachers appointed to teach subjects like mathematics and science were living in a state of utter penury. Their unpaid honorarium for the past 48 long months is a solid reason for their poor position. As many as 227 teachers of a total of 90 Madarsa in the city have not received the amounts fixed for them.

According to the news report, the government had approved to provide an honorarium to the teachers under the modernisation scheme of the Madarsa. A big chunk of 80% of it came from the central government while the state govt gave the rest amount of 20%. Since the year 2019, the state government started giving 40% amount. So far a graduate passed teacher got Rs 8000 while Post-graduate degree holder teacher received Rs 15000.

According to one estimate, there were 55 thousand Madarsa teachers in the whole of the state.

However, the state govt has not released its part of the amount for the past six months. The central government has not released its part of the honorarium for the past 48 months.

Indeed, this has created a financial problem to the Madarsa teachers. They have told that they are not in a position to run their family. Some have opted for tutoring the students.

The district welfare officer Dr Priyanka Awasthi assured that demand to this effect had been despatched to the state government. The problem would soon be resolved.
