NEW DELHI, Feb 19 (NNN-PTI) – Three militants were killed today, in a fierce gunfight with government forces, in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gunfight broke out in Tral area of Pulwama district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
A senior police official, posted in Pulwama said, “The operation was carried out jointly by the army, paramilitary and police.”
According to police, the gunfight erupted after government forces cordoned off the area, on specific intelligence information, suggesting the presence of the militants.
“No sooner than the joint contingents of the army, paramilitary and police reached near the suspected area, the militants present there fired upon them, thereby triggering a gunfight,” the police official said.
The slain militants were identified as local cadres.
A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.
