JERUSALEM, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Ben Gurion University (BGU) in southern Israel announced Monday the initiation of a consortium, led by BGU and Northwestern University in the U.S. state of Illinois, for the development of new technologies to solve global water challenges.
The multi-institutional international program, called the Collaborative Water-Energy Research Center, has a total budget of 21.4 million U.S. dollars.
This includes a 9.2-million-dollar grant over five years from the U.S. Department of Energy and Israel's Ministry of Energy together with the Israel Innovation Authority.
Working at the intersection of water and energy, the team will develop technologies in three areas: energy-efficient enhanced water supply, waste water reuse and resource recovery, and energy-water systems.
According to BGU, technology development efforts will culminate in pilot testing at water and waste water facilities in both Israel and the United States.
After being validated, the new technologies could potentially be implemented worldwide.
