India: Banking business in city closes due to strike

Kanpur: Banks on strike. Transactions on hold. Customers maintain patience. Today remains the second day of the banking strike in support of the employee's various demands including privatisation of the banks.

During the strike on the first day when the branch of Bank of India at Birhana Road opened, the employees and union office bearers reached there and started raising slogans. As a result, the bank was closed.

Striking employees under the banner of the united forum of bank unions staged a dharna at PNB in the city's Birhana Road, Bank of India regional office at Bada Chauraha and other places.

It was reported that the banking business of Rs 500 crore was hampered due to the strike on the first day. Neither money was transacted through RTGS ( 70 crores) nor NIFT(20 crores). Even foreign exchange transactions (100) remained off.
