BJP is in denial of the latest National Sample Survey Organisation’s data, which was withheld by the Modi government, showing that unemployment in India post-demonetisation has reached a four-decade high.
Modi government tried to suppress the data for a while but the cat got out of the bag. Two members of the National Statistical Commission, including the acting Chairman, a statutory body which releases the NSSO reports, have resigned.
The data has now been well publicised and the Modi government is in damage control mode by trying to discredit the information.
Yesterday; prime minister's economic advisory council chief Bibek Debroy announced that government will conduct a new national sample survey on employment, which will show that there has been "substantial job creation". The reason Debroy provided is that "the enterprise surveys provide a very imperfect understanding of what is happening to employment in India" because India's labour force is still informal and unorganised.
There has been numerous cases where individuals have reported their job loss, and continued unemployment since demonetisation. Latest National Sample Survey Organisation’s data reflects the true job situation.
But instead of trying to fix the situation, BJP has announced a new national sample survey on employment, that gives them the opportunity to play with the numbers and present it in a manner that could show a very different picture – a picture quite far from the reality.
