PHNOM PENH, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's anti-drug police have recently arrested 10 suspected drug traffickers in two separate cases involving about 40 kg illicit drugs, police said on Friday.
In one case, police arrested eight suspects, including a Thai woman, in the northwestern Banteay Meanchey province on Wednesday, seizing from them 34 kg crystal methamphetamine, 110 ecstasy pills, 383 methamphetamine pills, two pistols and two cars, the National Police said.
In the other case, police in the northwestern Preah Vihear province arrested two Lao nationals on Wednesday for smuggling about 5 kg crystal methamphetamine from Laos into Cambodia, the Anti-Drug Department said in a news release, adding that police also seized a motorized boat from the suspects.
The Southeast Asian country has no death sentence in punishing drug trafficking. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 g drugs could be jailed for life.
According to the Anti-Drug Department, Cambodia arrested 6,386 drug-related suspects including 79 foreigners of eight nationalities between January and May this year, seizing roughly 692 kg illicit drugs.
